“Even the climate is Basque,” was heard more than once during the “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country.” In fact, what began at noon as an authentic “xirimiri” turned into a down pour that forced the event to end a little earlier than expected. But that was all, because the Basque community in Argentina was not scared and faced the bad weather with music and dances with several excellent food options, and above all an unshakeable Basque feeling. Another edition of BAC has concluded and as ones before it, has left hundreds of images, sounds and memories that EuskalKultura.com will publish starting tomorrow.

Bueno Aires, Argentina.  “Buenos Aires Celebrates,” is a festival tribute that is held in Buenos Aires to honor of various communities living there. Sponsored by the city government, activities take place in the heart of the capital on Avenida de Mayo, meters from the Cabildo.

The event that featured the Basque Country and its descendants took place yesterday, May 11th --its first edition was in 2011 and second in 2012-- and it was very successful, despite the bad weather that reigned during the entire day.  According to city government estimates, the event was visited by between 6,000 and 8,000 people.

Some came to reunite with their roots, others out of curiosity, but they all had the chance to touch Basque culture in one of many ways.  Music recitals, song and dance; a big parade of Euskal Echea students; a tamborrada directed by Maestro Jose Gutierrez and Iñaki Armendariz, a cooking class by Chef Itziar Aguirre and Takehiro Ohno, a Human Chain proposed by thte Gure Esku Dago movement; international visitors – including members of La Oreja de Van Gogh and writer Toti Martinez de Lezea at the Euskadi-Basque Country stand – Euskera, rural sports, and of course cultural and gastronomic booths…Once again the coasts of the Cantabrian and the Rio de la Plata hugged despite the distance.

Also divided between both sides of the Ocean, EuskalKultura.com was also part of the festival and gathered images and moments to share with its readers.  Starting tomorrow, the “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country,” in detail with photos and videos.
