The City of Buenos Aires published “Vascos in Buenos Aires”, a book on the city's Basque presence

The work is part of a collection edited by the city’s government to present the identities of various communities in the capital. Vascos en Buenos Aires (Basques in Buenos Aires) will be presented on December 4th at 18:30 in the Dorado Room of the Cultural Center in a ceremony that will be attended by local city government officials, and the Delegation of Euskadi in Argentina-Mercosur. This is the fifth volume of the collection following others dedicated to the Japanese, Italian, and the Jewish and Armenian genocides. It will be presented in the Basque Country in January.

Buenos Aires, Argentina. As part of the activities associated with the International Day of Euskera, the Under-Secretariat for Human Rights and Cultural Pluralism, though the General Directorate of Communities of the City of Buenos Aires and the Delegation of Euskadi for Argentina-Mercosur will present the book Vascos en Buenos Aires next Wednesday. 

The goal of the publication is to introduce the local Basque  community to the general public as well as the history and present of the Basque country, and to acknowledge the Basque immigration to the city. The book is organized in two sections.  The first is dedicated to the presentation of the country and the second highlights the historical participation and current mission of the Basques and their descendants on this bank of the Rio de la Plata.

Vascos en Buenos Aires is composed of the following sections: “Link after Link” (by Claudio Avruj, General Director of Institutional Relations  of the Secretary General of the CABA Government); “Our Proposal,” (by Julio Croci, coordinator of the Directorate of Communities): “Eskerrik Asko, Buenos Aires,” (Message from Lehendakari Urkullu); “Thank you Buenos Aires for Opening your Arms for us” (Message from the Delegate of Euskadi in Argentina-Mercosur, Sara Pagola); “Introduction,” “The Basque Country,” “Brief History of the Basque Country,” “A Modern Country Thriving from an Ancient Culture and the Vanguard,” “Basque Migration to Buenos Aires,” “The Basques in the Religious Life in Buenos Aires,” “The Basque Presence in the Barrio of Almagro,” “Basque Institutions in Buenos Aires.”

The book includes texts and a large photo collection, with  contributions by the following Basque clubs and institutions in Buenos Aires: The Lagun Onak Choir Association, the Denak Bat Cultural Association, the Laurak Bat Basque Club, the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea Basque Center, the Gure Echea Basque-Argentinean Club, Ekin Basque Publisher, the Euskal Echea Cultural and Charity Association, Euskaltzaleak, Eusko Kultur Etxea, FEVA and the Juan de Garay Foundation.

The book will be given to each public school in the city of Buenos Aires so that it becomes part of the resources in each library.  In the same way, a copy will also be presented to everyone attending the presentation.

Presentation of Vascos en Buenos Aires

The book presentation is part of the International Day of Euskera activities.

The ceremony will begin at 18:30 with an Aurresku by dantzaris of various local Basque institutions and accompanied by txistu and violin.  Following, after the welcome remarks, Claudio Abruj, will represent the local government and say few words: Sara Pagola will represent the Delegation of the Basque Government and Arantxa Anitua, will represent FEVA.   The event will continue with the screening of explanatory videos on the the Argentinan Euskaraz program and then the book will be presented.  The closing ceremony will be by the Lagun Onak choir who will sing three songs in Basques.  The book presentation will take place in the Dorado Hall at the city’s Cultural Center (Av. De Mayo 575).
