The government led by Uxue Barkos has reported through a note that the Minister of Citizen and Institutional Relations of the Government of Navarre, Ana Ollo, and the General Director of Communication and Institutional Relations, Pello Pellejero, met last Tuesday with the Basque Government’s Secretary General of Foreign Action, Marian Elorza, and with the Director of the Basque Community Abroad, Gorka Alvarez.

Iruña-Pamplona.   The note from the Government of Navarre refers to the meeting that addressed issues related to the Basque Diaspora and Navarre, and was a sharing of experiences and lines of work of both governments in this area.  It also explains that they also talked about possible areas of collaboration in respect to institutions, showing the mutual interest of both in developing joint cooperative actions.

Along with this, both governments showed a willingness to continue deepening institutional development and Diaspora policies that have revealed the potential and possibility of cooperation in the area of emigrated citizens and their descendants who wish to maintain their relationship and bond with the land where their ancestors were born.

Aware of this UPN has criticized the Government presided by Uxue Barkos saying that “she pretends to link those from Navarre who live abroad and Navarre itself with the Basque Country.  The Basque clubs abroad hold to the Nationalist thesis, and don’t consider themselves part of Spain and dream of a Basque nation that includes Navarre,” as an example she cites the Laurak Bat Basque Club in Buenos Aires “that joyfully welcomed the participation of the Government of Navarre" at the cultural event ‘Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country,’ last March in the Argentine capital city.

In regards to this event, sources from Laurak Bat have indicated that its entity is one that “was born in Buenos Aires 140 years ago, created by members originating of descendants from Araba, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Nafarroa.”  “In this case, our Navarrese members invited their government, the Government of Navarre, to participate in the event, an invitation that the Government graciously accepted” and that resulted in the setup of a stand where the Government of Navarre was able to share information about Navarre and its cultural and touristical resources.
