Donostia-San Sebastián. The conference will take place November 17-19 in Donostia organized by the Hamaika Bide Elkartea Association, that is dedicated to research on Basque exile, including a session as a tribute to José Ángel Ascunce, its colleague and honorary president. Distinguished researcher and man of culture, Ascunce passed away in February 2020. Entitled “The Myths of Exile, Don Quixote and other Utopian Heroes. In Tribute to Jose Angel Ascunce,” the conference will take place at the Library at the University of the Basque Country in Donostia and in the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa’s Assembly Hall.
According to organizers, in texts and works created in exile from the War of 1936-1939, references are repeated that configure models, ideals or utopias of the men and women who had to flee the Franco regime. For some, Don Quixote could be the image of the utopian idealist, such as Saint Ignatius of Loyola, García Lorca, Buenaventura Durruti, Lope de Aguirre or José Antonio Agirre. Other myths could be pure Basque, classical culture, the old Euskal Herria, the federal republic or the Tree of Gernika.
The conference aims to analyze some of these myths, giving Don Quixote a certain prominence "as an area of study that interested José Ángel Ascunce (he has some works on the subject, as well as on the myths of exile), but which also identified exiles of very different ideologies,” they explain
