Macachin, Argentina. The local Basque club is working of the “Euskal Sustraiak: In Search of Basque Roots” project with two main goals. The first is to create a historic archive with information about Basque immigrants that came from any one of the seven provinces in the Basque Country to Macachin or the surrounding rural area (Alpachiri, Rolón, Anchorena, Miguel Riglos and Doblas).
The second is the construction of a monument to the Basque immigrant that will be placed in the northern part of town, and possibly be inaugurated next March during the Basque club’s anniversary celebration. The monument will include a big plaque where names of Basque immigrants who arrived between 1870 to the present will be inscribed.
According to club reference, Tomas Vicente, information on some 500 people has already been gathered. “We want to have this archive at the club and make it available to individuals, families, or researchers looking for information. We are doing well; the people in this small town are joining in and contributing to the effort. We also know that we still have a lot of information to collect.”
A work group at the club has been doing this work, and if you like to join the effort, please let them know. The information should include, if possible, the names of the immigrant, place of origin in the Basque Country, place(s) of residence in Argentina, when he/she emigrated and his/her descendants.
