Joining the rest of the Diaspora, Basque clubs in Argentina will celebrate Aberri Eguna over the coming days

The festivities will begin on March 27, Easter Sunday, Aberri Eguna, and will run through the first weeks of April.  The activities that will be held are varied and all claiming the Basque Homeland.  In this article, EuskalKultura.com provides a sample of the events that we have been notified of. 

Buenos Aires, Argentina.   Even if the official day, Aberri Eguna, is on Easter Sunday, March 27, the majority of the Basque clubs in Argentina have a tradition of celebrating it later, after Holy Week, in hopes of gathering the largest number of members and friends possible.

For a decade, nevertheless, the main celebration in the country is held in Cañuelas, where they host the Dantzari Get-Together that gathers more than 100 youth.  Some clubs travel to Cañuelas to celebrate this special date with friends from other places.

10th Dantzari Get-Together on Aberri Eguna in Cañuelas: The event will be held on April 2 and 3 with the following program. On Saturday afternoon there will be an exhibition of the dance groups and a recital by Maral in the city’s main square.  After dinner, there will be a dance at the Rural.  On Sunday, also at the Rural Sociedad, and the event will conclude with a gigantic paella.  Anyone wishing to have lunch, cost of tickets is $250 for adults and $130 for children under 10.  Anyone wishing to attend should come with place stings.  To RSVP, call 02226 15606028 (Daniel Sancholuz) or 02226 15486554 (Veronica Zulaica).

Many Basque clubs will continue publishing their events through next week.  With information that we have gathered to day, and for those who can’t make it to Cañuelas, here is a list of other events taking place in the country.  The list will continue to be updated:

-Arrecifes:  Dinner and a movie.  The Euskaldunak Denak Bat, on Saturday, April 2 at 20:30 will show Amama with the person in charge of traveling Basque films, Carlos Gabilondo, and the star of the film, nominated for a Goya, Iraia Elias.  After the film, everyone present will have dinner.  The cost of the ticket is $100.  RSVP is suggested.

-Azul: Besides the traditional Aberri Eguna lunch on March 27, the Gure Txokoa will publish a text about Aberri Eguna in the local media.

-Bahía Blanca: The Basque club will have mass on April 3 at the Church San Luis Gonzaga and later lunch at the clubhouse.  Entertainment will be provided by the club's Otxote at the Euskal Etxea.

-Bariloche: The Mendiko Euzko Etxea will host its traditional event at the Plaza de las Colectividades.  After the ceremony there will be an aperitif at the clubhouse.  The event will be held on April 2.

-Buenos Aires: The Laurak Bat will celebrate Aberi Eguna on April 9 at an event that will gather members and friends.

-Buenos Aires: Euskaltzaleak will celebrate Aberri Eguna on Friday, April 8.

-Córdoba: The Gerora Association invites everyone to its lunch on April 17 at 13:00, at the State’s Energy Labor Union, on Sarmiento 834.  The afternoon will include entertainment by the club’s dantzaris and musician.

-Corpus Christi: The local Basque club will be represented at mass on March 27 with an Ikurriña.  Mass is being offered for the Basque people, members of the board of directors as well as members who have passed away.  There will also be a flag raising at the clubhouse and there will be a friendly gathering at 7pm.

-Chivilcoy: Beti Aurrera will prepare empanadas and ribs for dinner on April 2 at the clubhouse.  In addition to celebrating the Day of the Basque Homeland, the club also wants to gather members to share the activities for the year and invite them to participate in the same.

-Mar del Plata: The Denak Bat Basque club will celebrate on April 10 at 10am with an Aurresku in front of the Tree of Gernika, located on the Plaza San Martin.  At 11am, there will be mass with the participation of the Beti Alai dance group, will perform traditional dances at 12:15 at the door of the cathedra.  The Aberri Eguna program will conclude with lunch for all members at the clubhouse.

-Mendoza: The Denak Bat Basque club will have a luncheon prepared by a chef fom Donostia and a video and talk about Aberri Eguna.  The event will take place on April 3 at the clubhouse.

-Nechochea: The Euzko Etxea in Necochea organized a two-day program to celebrate the Day of the Basque Homeland.  Saturday, March 26 at 22pm there will be a dinner at the Gastronomic Society “Betikoak” that will include lamb stew.  On Sunday, March 27 at 11am there will be mass at the church of Santa Maria del Carmen, at noon, there will be tribute paid and a wreath laid at the tree of Gernika; at 12:30 there will be txikiteo.

-The Guillermo Larregui Basque club in Chacabuco, and the Zingirako Euskaldunak in Chascomús and the Euzko Etxea in La Plata will join in the festivities in Cañuelas.  The dantzaris from these club will participate in the show on Saturday in the plaza.
