The IX International Seminar Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi (Beyond the Borders of Euskal Herria) will take place in June at the University of Deusto in Bilbao. This year, the meeting of experts in Basque Diaspora and exile will focus on the return of Basque emigrants and its impact on society. What was left of the homes of returned emigrants and exiles? How were they received? What contributions, tangible or intangible, did they make to the country? What effect did they have on the household or local economies? International experts will try to answer these and more questions.

Bilbao, Bizkaia.  Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi will analyze the phenomenon of returning Basque immigrants in its ninth edition, which will take place on June 18 and 19 at the University of Deusto in Bilbao. The seminar aims to address the phenomenon of Basque return migration and deepen both the knowledge of the adaptation and reintegration of these returning emigrants and exiles themselves and their social and economic contributions as well as their impact on their society of origin.

“The concept of return implies a theory that goes further than the physical return of the migrant.  In itself, migration must be understood more as a social construction of relationships than a mere crossing of geographical distances,” according to organizers.  In this way, the seminar will explore the links between the Diaspora and the homeland, emotional and ideological, economic or cultural, and their consequences on the homeland.

The program will be published soon.  The conference is being organized by the Institute of Human Rights and the Institute of Basque Studies at the University of Deusto, in collaboration with the Basque Government’s Department of Basque Citizens and Collectivities Abroad, the University of the Basque Country, and Eusko Ikaskuntza / Euskonews / Euskosare.
