Donostia-San Sebastian. …or if you already speak, why don’t you teach classes since there is a strong demand for professors in various states.  The Federation of Basque clubs in the US (NABO – North American Basque Organizations) is very committed to teaching and Basque language development.  This is reflected in the classes supported by Basque clubs and their members. Currently, 17 professors teach classes in 12 clubs spread all over the country.

Aitor Iñarra, NABO’s Euskera coordinator and Basque teacher is originally from Donostia. He explained that currently there are three ways to learn Basque in NABO:

  • There is the traditional face-to-face class system in several Basque clubs.  Students meet with their teacher and other students each week for class at these centers: Bostin, New York, Washington DC, Denver, CO, Salt Lake City, UT, Boise and Homedale, ID, Reno NV, Rocklin, Los Banos and San Francisco, CA.  There is also a school in Montreal.
  • There are online classes.  This includes (AISA) provided by the Basque Government. NABO wprovides a tutor for those needing additional help.
  • Classes are also available via video conference.  Given the long distances between clubs in the US, as well as not every city has a club, video conference classes are also a possibility. In this way, students participate from home, or from the place chosen by the instructor or other students.  The method provides much flexibility to students and it enjoying notable success since its implementation a few months ago.

More information on all of these is available at this link: http://nabasque.eus/nabo_euskara.html

This is all made possible thanks to the collaboration and help provided by the Basque Government over several years through HABE, and since last year by the Etxepare Basque Institute.

Looking towards the future, NABO would like to continue creating classes at Basque clubs, even if this means doubling efforts, since it has been verified that there is potential unmet demand and that the number of classes and students has increased in recent years.

If you would like to join the effort, either as a student or teacher, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Aitor Iñarra to see what the possibilities may be where you life.  You can do so through NABO’s website, or by writing Aitor directly here: naboeuskara@gmail.com. Eskerrik asko aldez aurretik, thank you in advance.
