Montevideo, Uruguay.   The participation of the Basque community in the first edition of the Series “Flavors of Distant Lands, an Introduction to Other Cultures,” took place from June 16-21 at the Cultural Space and Museum “at the foot of the Muralla.”  Invited by the association, of migrant families and friends “Idas y Vueltas,” the Haize Hegoa Basque club organized an exhibit providing an array typical Basque things including symbols, musical instruments, and costumes from the various regions as well as dances form Euskal Herria.

On the inaugural day there were nearly 100 people to enjoy the exhibit that also included, as part of its opening, a tasting of typical dishes like pintxos including tortilla, fish, txistorra, leche frita, and rice pudding.  The tasting was accompanied by a talk about Basque food and culture.

Basque dance was also included in the group thanks to the Eusko Indarra dancers from Haize Hegoa who danced “Aurresku” as well as doing audience participation dances, who danced to live music provided by Leonel Aguirre.

The Basque club told EuskalKultura.com that it was very satisfied with the success of the event.  “With the diners' approval, we were able to enjoy a wonderful inaugural ceremony.  In addition, as an event to disseminate culture, the proposal was a very good opportunity and was visited by schools, and individuals who were interested in the different origins of the various communities represented,” they said.
