For another year, Basque gastronomy has achieved a distinguished spot on the list of the 50 best restaurants in the world, by the British magazine Restaurant.  Among the top ten selected, there are two Basques: the Mugaritz with Aduriz (#7) and Victor Arguinzoiniz’s Asador Etxebarri (#10).  Following are Eneko Atxa’s  Azurmendi, (that moved from #19 to #16), and Arzak, #21.

Donostia-San Sebastian.   Basque gastronomy is in a really good shape and continues achieving international acclaim.  The latest, the inclusion of four Basque restaurants among the 25 best in the world, according to 2016 The World's 50 Best list that is published every year in the British magazine, Restaurant.

There are few countries that can show gastronomic strength, with two restaurants, the Mugaritz and the Asador Etxeberri among the top 10 (#7 and #10 respectively).  The Etxeberri also debuted in the top ten, climbing three spots since last year.

The list also includes Eneko Atxa’s Azurmendi, #16, and Arzak that despite losing four spots, is still #21.

From 50 to 100

Before, Restaurant published the list from 51-100 that also includes some Basque restaurants.  Josean Alija’s Nerua, in the Guggenheim Bilbao, is #55 (with a strong ascent of 13 spots), while the Martin Berasategi in Lasarte-Oria climbed two spots and is now #59.

It is also worth mentioning that restaurants like Mikel Alonso and Bruno Oteiza’s Biko, in Mexico, is #49, and Le Chateubriand in Paris, with Basque chef Iñaki Azpitarte, is #79.

There are a couple of curiosities on the list: #61 is Lasai in Rio de Janeiro, and if the name is Basque it is because its chef worked with Aduriz in the Mugaritz; while #68 is occupied by Tegui, in Buenos Aires, with Argentine cook of Basque origin German Martitegui, who will soon appear on the ETB’s program Origen looking for his roots in Euskal Herria.
