Prizes included copies of the books: Urruneko mendebalean artzain (Basque), Gardeners of Identity (English), Basques in Buenos Aires (Spanish), as well as the DVD of the documentary Zerutik sua dator. They will now travel to the Basque Country, Germany, Argentina and the US. Two hundred and thirty seven people entered from eleven countries to participate in the latest raffle held by EuskalKultura.com, details follow. We will hold another soon.

Donostia-San Sebastian.  A total of 237 people sent emails to participate in the raffle from 11 countries: including the Basque Country, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Uruguay, Italy, the US and Spain.

Even though the criteria to participate in the raffle were spelled out, there were still 18 emails that didn’t qualify either because they left information out, or because they didn’t indicate which prize they preferred, or because they missed the deadline.

In regards to the prizes: 28 people chose Urruneko mendebalean artzainGardeners of Identity chosen by 24; 59 opted for Basques in Buenos Aires; and 108 chose the DVD Zerutik sua dator.

Here the information on the prizes offered this time around:

  • Urruneko mendebalean artzain by Mattin Etchamendy (in Basque). The book tells the story of the author, a Basque immigrant to the North American West, from the time when he leaves his hometown of Ezterenzubi, Behe Nafarroa. The book also includes a prologue by Joseba Etxarri, director of EuskalKultura.com.
  • Gardeners of Identity, Basques in the San Francisco Bay Area by Pedro J. Oiarzabal (in English). Published by the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, the historian and researcher Pedro Oiarzabal introduces us to the Basque reality in San Francisco, California and its large Basque community, its history and institutions.
  • Vascos en Buenos Aires (Basques in Buenos Aires) by various authors (in Spanish). This book was published last December by the city of Buenos Aires, and was not originally meant for the Basque community, but for the general population of the area, explaining the Basque reality, their country, culture and their presence and contribution to the history and reality of Argentinean capital.
  • Zerutik sua dator, documentary in Basque and Spanish – DVD directed by Egoitz Rodriguez Olea, that gathers the testimonies of fifty people who experienced the bombings in Bizkaia first hand during the Spanish Civil War in 1937.
