Donostia-San Sebastian. The news came after the Argentine Government’s announcement to extend the quarantine for the coronavirus, for another two weeks, until April14th.  Confirming that the massive "Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country" event that was to take place this May 10 on Avenida de Mayo in the capital is cancelled and postponed, for the time being without a new date.

Other referential events on this year’s Basque calendar in Argentina, like the Dantzari Aberri Eguna Gathering organized by the Cañuelas Basque club that was planned for April 18 and 19th have been cancelled by organizers and the same thing is happening today with many programmed events at Basque clubs around the world in the coming weeks and months.

Jaialdi 2020

In the United States, that is what happened to NABO’s Bertsolari Tribute that was to take place on March 14th; and since then many events on the North American Basque calendar have also been cancelled including Mus Tournaments in Gardnerville slated for March 21st, along with others in Gooding, Idaho and Reno, Nevada for example, along with the Fresno Basque Festival on May 2nd that would have inaugurated the Basque festival season in the west and was cancelled last week,

But what is going to happen with Jaialdi in Boise? The last word from organizers is that they are continuing to plan to carry it out while monitoring the situation daily with respect to the coronavirus.  it is certain that there are many questions to be answered when there are less than four months left.  There is a large contingent of people coming from the Basque Country, including artists, athletes, dantzaris, etc. all part of the Jaialdi program that need to decide soon whether to attend or to cancel their trips.  And right now they are still confined to their homes by preventive quarantine. a quarantine that will be lifted perhaps this month, but how long will it take to get back there and in the US to normal? And the US is right now behind them in timing. Will the authorities allow a massive event like Jaialdi, and will people be willing to attend? China, the country that seems to be in the process of overcoming the pandemic, now imposes quarantine on everyone arriving in the country from abroad. All this considering any US domestic or European government measures, lifting of bans and the reestablishment of flights, in a year that has become severely complicated overnight, with consequences that were unthinkable just a few months ago.
