Basque musician Iñaki Dieguez will give three concerts in California starting this Sunday as part of his two-week tour. Dieguez will present his album Birak (Tours), done after his experience of touring the worked for three years with “Cirque de Soleil.” The first concert will take place on Sunday in Santa Barbara followed by Chino and San Francisco. In Chino he will provide a special performance with Zuberotar singer, Benito Zubeldia, with whom he will get the entire Basque club singing.

Irun Gipuzkoa.  Iñaki Dieguez, musician from Irun, has a very close relationship with the US Basque Diaspora proof of which is that part of his latest album was recorded there.  This album is called Birak his first solo work that reflects his experiences on his three-year tour around the worlds with “Cirque du Soleil.”

“The chaos of New York or Toronto, the cultural differences with Korea, the forests of Yosemite, the Basque Diaspora in California…,” are some of the experiences that have made a mark on this album.  Dieguez lived in California for months where he collaborated with US and Brazilian musicians to give his songs form.  The result is a different album that mixes, successfully, sounds of the fandango and the bossa nova.  “It is being very well received and I was able to give many concerts in various festivals,” he explained to EuskalKultura.com.

Back to California

He is now back in the US, for a two-week tour in California.  On Sunday he will play in Santa Barbara invited by the Santa Barbara Accorions Club.  It will take place in the Trinity Lutheran Church and will also include two local groups serving as opening acts.




Chino and San Francisco

Following the musician will take a couple of days to tour California and visit old friends, much of whom are part of the Basque community.  ON September 13 he will play at Chino’s Euskal Etxea along with Zuberotar, Benito Zubeldia.  “During the first part I will play pieces from the album and during the second we will do something special and will sing some Kantu Zaharrak (old songs) so that our friends in Chino can sing,” he says.

The tour will end on Sunday the 15 in San Francisco invited by the San Francisco Accordion Club.  Dieguez may also play one more concert in Bakersfield but this is yet to be determined.
