KulturMapp is a free app. available for Android phones that will soon be available for iPhones too. With this application users will have a map of the Basque Country that includes details and information on places of interest. KulturMapp includes historical, cultural and tourist data from more than 175 points in the Basque Country and a file of 400 old photos.

The Basque Research web site, managed by the Elhuyar Foundation, was created in 2002 within the 2001-2004 Science and Technology Plan initiated by the Basque Government. In that plan, the dissemination of science and technology was deemed to be a strategic objective, and it is precisely in these fields wherein the Elhuyar Foundation has developed the project. For ten years now the web site has acted as the showcase for work carried out in the Basque Country in research, development and innovation. Over these ten years some 8,000 news items and events have been collated and disseminated in the Basque Country as well as throughout the rest of the world.

The Uruguayan Leonat Egiazabal is one of the Basques from the Diaspora who is committed to the Basque culture, language and identity. The legacy that he received with greater or lesser intensity from his family has been secured strengthened and made his own to the point of living it in his everyday life, as part of his daily activities in the Rio de la Plata area. He was recently interviewed by daily El Pueblo of Salto.

A new barnetegi, intensive Basque course, began on June 9 for the Basque teachers in North American clubs. Teachers have come from Colorado, Chicago, San Francisco, Reno and other places to perfect their Basque in order to be able to teach at their respective Basque clubs/centers. These teachers receive specific training, via the internet, as part of HABE’s year-round Euskara Munduan Program. At the barnetegi they will practice what they have learned during the year. Izaskun Kortazar also notified that they are still one student short to carry out the barnetegi scheduled in Arantzazu (Gipuzkoa) from July 2-14. This would be for basic Basque.

The Bilbo Zaharra Basque language school will celebrate the fifth edition of Klasikoen Irakurketa (Reading the Classics), a continuous reading of a classic work of Basque Literature. This year, the chosen novel is 'Zergatik Panpox?' by Arantxa Urretabizkaia. Throughout the day relevant figures in Basque culture, Basque language students, and some unknowns will get on stage at the Arriaga Theater in Bilbao to read passages from the work. As in past editions, several Basque clubs will join in the effort via video recordings which will be screened live.

It was 1988 when a group of returning Basque migrants and families from Australia started to get together in Oleta in the Ugaran neighborhood of Amoroto in Bizkaia. This last Saturday the gathering celebrated its XXIV anniversary. Around forty people attended the event on Saturday that has reached its silver anniversary and which testifies to the fact that the XX century was marked by a significant Basque emigration, in particular to North Queensland where the Basque club now resides in Townsville. This year’s get together was also attended by Pedro Oiarzabal and Ainara Puerta Larrañaga, historians from the University of Deusto specialized in migration and the Diaspora, who we thank for their collaboration in the publication of this article.

The XV Forum for Iberian Studies will be held June 20-22 at Oxford University in the United Kingdom, with Euskera playing a leading role. A large delegation of Basque experts will participate in the conference, including Bernardo Atxaga, Josu Amezaga, Xabi Paya, Itziar Azpeitia, and Mari Jose Olaziregi, the direction of Promotion of the Basque Language of the Etxepare Basque Institute. Thanks to these presenters, Basque will be one of the featured topics at the conference. Additionally, six of these experts will present in Basque according to the Etxepare Institute.

For the last few weeks the Euskal Etxea in Berlin has hosted numerous activities commemorating the Bombing of Gernika that celebrates its 75 anniversary this year. The Basque club has also involved locals in this endeavor who have participated in several events. An example was a tribute that took place at the Guernica Plaza where many became emotional at the reading of a letter from a young girl from Gernika. The closing event was also attended by many who helped paint Peace Graffiti, a reinterpretation of Picasso’s “Guernica” by five Basque and German artists.

Youth in the Diaspora Basque clubs have until the end of the month to apply for Gaztemundu, but they should keep in mind that this year’s program is focused on teaching Euskera. For this reason, people older than 18 who are teaching or who want to teach Basque in their Basque clubs are the ones who will really benefit from the program. Gaztemundu will begin on September 3 and this year will be complemented by a two-week barnetegi.

The annual concert cycle of the Euskal Echea Association of Buenos Aires started last April. Recitals take place once a month on the second Friday at 7pm in the chapel at their headquarters on Sarandi Street 735 in Buenos Aires. June’s concert will take place today, the 8, and will include the performance of a friend of the cycle, organist Ana Paula Segurola, and singer Mercedes García Blesa. At this concert they will perform a Zortziko that was found in a manuscript that is actually housed in the treasures of the National Library of the Argentinean Republic. Admission is free and open to the public.
