EmpreBask Mexico teaches a course on the internationalization of Basque business at the UNAM

First class of the course on the internationalization of Basque business at the UNAM (photo Emprebask) The course, “The Internationalization Process of Firms: the Basque Business Model,” has begun successfully at the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM) with more than twenty students and faculty from the College of Accounting and Administration. The course was organized by EmpreBask, the Association of Basque Entrepreneurs of Mexico, with the collaboration of the Delegation of Euskadi. The classes are taught by Emprebask members themselves who will share their experience and knowledge with the students.

This week’s Basque events in Boise: the comedy “Kutsidazu bidea, Ixabel” and a concert by Noka

A scene from "Kutsidazu bidea, Ixabel" The Basque community in Boise will have several opportunities in the upcoming weeks to enjoy Basque culture, three of which we highlight here. First on February 21, the movie Kutsidazu bidea, Ixabel will be shown at the Basque Center. This movie is the hilarious narration of the adventures of a Basque language student. Next, on February 23, the group Noka, from California, will give a concert on the occasion of the International Day of Mother Tongues. Finally, Dr. John Ysursa will give a talk on annual Basque rituals at the Basque Museum.

Hispanic is fine, but I'm Basque: no doubt for USA Congressman John Garamendi about his background

John Garamendi and Bill Clinton during a visit to the Basque Cultural Center in San Francisco in 2009 during the 2009 Congressional campaign The Associated Press published an article a few days ago regarding how difficult it is to determine the number of Hispanics in the US Congress. The reason is that various congressmen that appear as Hispanic on some lists don’t consider themselves as part of that category. One of them is John Garamendi, Congressman from California since 2009 that considers himself Basque. A 2011 census estimates that there are 53,045 Basque descendants in the US.

The Basque language aroused interest in Paris with events at the Expolangues Fair and the Sorbonne

At the Basque Stand at the Expolangues Fair: Garikoitz Menidzabal, Mari Jose Olaziregi,Miren Dobaran, Miren Ibarluzea, Aizpea Goenaga, Miren Azkarate, Josune Ariztondo, Pello Salaburu, Itziar Nogueras and Argitxu Camus (photo Etxepare) The Basque delegation has already returned from the Expolangues Fair in Paris last week. Among those present were the Etxepare Basque Institute, the Provincial Government of Bizkaia, the Azkue Foundation, and Langune. Information about Basque was provided at the stand, and was also promoted through successful talks that took place at the fair as well as at the Sorbonne University, thanks to writer Mariasun Landa and Historian Argitxu Camus.

Vallejo, accompanied by technician Benan Oregi, will travel to New York tomorrow on the final stop of this tour that will then lead them back to Euskadi.

Cover of the Guide to Basques and Navarrese in Mexico in the 19 Century by Josu Ruiz de Gordejuela Thanks to the VascosMexico list, that gathers a large group of Basque descendants in this North American country, we found out about the availability online of a book that would be very interesting for anyone looking for family members or ancestors who immigrated to Mexico. The book, written by historian Josu Ruiz de Gordejuela, is called Guide to Basques and Navarrese to Mexico. XIX Century that provides a list with data of 4,700 emigrants born in the Basque Country who settled in Mexico during this century.

Boise State University offers two Ph.D. assistantships in the area of Engineering for Basque students

The Micron Engineering Center at BSU (photo BSU) Boise State University (BSU) has announced a new edition of the Basque Ph.D. Scholarships, two assistantships for Basque students. Grants are for one year, in which students may pursue a Ph.D. in the prestigious Electrical Engineering program at this university. The scholarships range between $18,000-$24,000 and include full tuition. Deadline to apply is March 15, 2013.

Basque descendants in Peru remember their roots with eight weeks of activities

The statute of Our Lady of Arantzazu that has visited the homes of several Basques in Peru During the last few weeks Peru has recalled its Basque heritage, thanks to various activities organized by the Brotherhood and 'Cofradia' of Our Lady of Arantzazu, at the University of San Martin de Porres, and the Editorial Fund of the Oiga magazine, founded by the late Basque-Peruvian journalist, Francisco Igartua Rovira. Events included a lecture commemorating Basque Language Day and San Javier, culminating with a large Basque lunch in Lima.

Google honors the record jump by Basque-Chilean Alberto Larraguibel, 64 years later

A photo extracted from a video of this historic jump On February 5, Google registered a picture of the jump by Basque-Chilean Alberto Larraguibel on the cover of its search engine in honor of the world record set in Viña del Mar in 1949, a record that still holds. Larraguibel and his horse, called Huaso, jumped a fence measuring 2.47 meters, a height that still has to be beat.
