Juan Jose Ibarretxe will visit Mexico where he will do a series of talks on the Basque Model of Development

Poster announcing Juan Jose Ibarretxe's talk at ITAM After participating in the Centennial events of the New York Basque club, the former Lehendakari (Basque president) Juan Jose Ibarretxe will visit Mexico for a week where he will give a series of talks and conferences. During his stay in the North American country, Ibarretxe will present the “Lehendakari Agirre Center,” a network research project aimed at studying and publicizing the Basque model of development. This is precisely what he will talk about tomorrow at ITAM and the day after at the Iberoamerican University.

Urkullu in the Big Apple, second day of EHMG conference and everything ready in NY for the Centennial Gala

Presentation by Historian Xabier Irujo at the 10th Edition of the EHMG Seminar at Columbia University (photo EuskalKultura.com) Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu begins the last leg of his US tour today with a program that includes meetings and presentations on Euskadi among experts and academics at Columbia University. In New York, Urkullu will attend events organized as part of Eusko Etxea of New York’s Centennial. This afternoon, the clubhouse will be the site of the last day of the Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi (EHMG) seminar with presentations by Anna Aguirre, Argitxu Camus-Etchecopar and Joseba Etxarri, director of EuskalKultura.com, as a lead in to a concert by Kalakan. Everything is ready for the big weekend of celebrations of the Basque club’s Centennial.

Basque activities in the US: Urkullu visits Washington and the Atxaga Chair was also very successful in New York

Pianist Iñaki Salvador performing at the "Mikel Laboa, in memoriam" tribute to the great Basque songwriter at the Black Box Theater in New York (photo EuskalKultura.com) The Basque Country and culture are playing a major roll this week in the US, thanks to a trip by Lehendakari Urkullu and events organized by the Atxaga Chair, the EHMG conference, and the Euzko-Etxea of New York’s Centennial festivities. The Lehendakari began a trip yesterday that included his first official visit to the US, where he will meet with various members of Congress and the Senate in Washington. On Monday the Atxaga Chair 2013 will begin at CUNY in New York, with open sessions that were very well received according to the Etxepare Institute. Today the Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi conference will take place and serves as a warm up for this weekend’s Centennial festivities that will take place in Manhattand and Greenpoint.

Rain could not dampen the spirit and good humor of the Basques in Ontario during their St Michael Festival

Procession of Saint Michael at the Ontario Basque club in a downpour (photo OntarioEE) The Ontario Basque Club in Oregon celebrated it’s first-ever Saint Michael’s Festival on September 29, a festive day in honor of the traditional Saint patron of the Basque Country. The Basque club had been preparing for the event for weeks, with great anticipation and even though an unexpected rain storm could have ruined it, the Basques in Ontario faced the weather with smiles on their faces and still enjoyed themselves. The group, Kalakan, closed the festivities with a concert at the Basque clubhouse.

Delegate of Euskadi in Argentina, Sara Pagola along with President of the Bar, Fernando Leven greeting those in attendance (photoChair) Organizers, and invited exhibitors, were very happy with how well-received the event was and agreed on the importance of generating activities that disseminate the Basque culture; above all in order to give higher visibility to work that has been done by the local Basque community. The conference closed in anticipation of holding the event again next year as a cycle or individual conferences. Among the authorities that inaugurated the event was the Delegate of Euskadi in Argentina, Sara Pagola.

The Lehendakari starts his US trip today to culminate at NY Basque club Centennial Celebration

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu greeting 2013 Gaztemundu participants las month (photo Irekia) Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu has left today for the US to carry out an official trip lasting almost one-week long aimed at “publicize Euskadi in all areas of development: political, economic, social and cultural.” Urkullu is accompanied by Arantza Tapia, the Councilor of Economic Development and Competiveness, who is already in the country developing an economic agenda. The trip will conclude with the Lehendakari’s participation in the Centennial Celebration festivities at the Eusko Etxea of New York.

New York Basque club’s Centennial celebration program starts today

Basque dancers at the foot of the Statue of Liberty (Photo EENY) New York’s Basque club celebrates 100 years of life and the centennial celebration has converted the city into a Basque and Diaspora cultural center this week. Coinciding with the event, the Atxaga Chair program begins today at CUNY, supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute with various events that are open to the public. On Thursday the Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi seminar will take place, this its tenth year, and on the weekend festivities will continue with concerts, shows and a Centennial Gala celebration. The trip that was sponsored by the Etxepare Institute was a great opportunity for the Basque writer to present his novel Twist that was recently translated into Spanish and is available in bookstores. Just after arriving in Buenos Aires, Cano attended the closing of the Basque Cultural Conference that took place at the Library of the Argentinean National Congress. There, he spoke with EuskalKultura.com in an interview where he gave his first impressions of the city, talked about Basque and Argentinean literature as well as about Twist.

During his life Pete served as the Secretary of State of Idaho, the Speaker of the House, and an elected member of the same and was one of the most popular and reelected officials that Idaho has ever known. His inseparable Basque character, Basque supporter, and Celebrated Son of Bizkaia, as he was recognized in an award given to him just two years ago by Boise’s Deputy General. In the events, along with family and North American officials, the Delegado of Euskadi in the US, Ander Caballero Barturen has also been present, who came from New York to represent Lehendakari Urkullu and the Basque Government.
