Basque band Berri Txarrak will visit China, Korea and Japan in their upcoming Asian Tour 2010

Berri Txarrak band members: Gorka Urbizu, Galder Izagirre and David Gonzalez From October 21st to November 4th, the Basque band Berri Txarrak will tour Asia including performances in China, Korea and Japan. They will be presenting their latest release `Payola´ with their new drummer Galder Izagirre. In China, they will play in Pengyu, Macau and Hong Kong. Afterwards, the band will be hitting South Korea, with three gigs in Seoul. Finally, they will perform in various cities of Japan with a local band Brahmn. This is the third time Berri Txarrak has played in Japan, but this time, they will also visit southern cities Kagoshima and Oita-Shi.

Vanessa Manjarrez is a Basque American girl, born in California, with Navarrese roots, in Luzaide. Class at the UBA: “Basque Immigration in Argentina: A Construction of a Diasporic Identity?”

A new class has become available at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). “Basque Immigration in Argentina: A Construction of a Diasporic Identity?” The Class will be available starting August 20th, and during 6 weeks, students will study and discuss about that at the Philosophy Faculty of the University of Buenos Aires. The course will be taught by Leandro Etchechury (Anthropology) and Eduardo Torry (Political Sciences), every Friday from 7 to 9 pm. There will be no sign up fee, and students will be able to register for the class until July 31st in the University Extension Offices.

US Basque language teachers met last weekend in Boise, Idaho for their annual workshop

The teachers in charge of the Basque language classes in the United States as a part of the agreement among NABO (the federation of Basque American organizations), HABE (European Basque educational institution focused on teaching the Basque language), US Basque clubs and the teachers themselves, met last weekend in Boise, Idaho for their annual workshop. Izaskun Kortazar NABO Euskera coordinator and Ibon Izurieta, Basque language teacher, sign the article, a report resuming the weekend.

Word of the trial against Egunkaria arrive in Idaho, USA, where it is followed by local Basques

Martxelo Otamendi, former editor of Egunkaria The Idaho press, its main daily, The Idaho Statesman, reported yesterday the start of the trial against the Basque newspaper Egunkaria and five of its executives. Given the here on several occasions to carry out different journalistic projects, as well as having stayed at Boise’s Mayor David Bieter’s house while covering the Idaho Memorial in 2002. Here is the article -entitled "Martxelo Otamendi, a Basque with ties in Idaho, faces a terrorism trial” - wondering what the people of Gernika’s sister city have to say regarding it as published in the aforementioned paper.

The CBS of Reno is now accepting applications for the William Douglass Scholar Award for 2010–2011

Bernardo Atxaga was Distinguished Scholar in 2007 The Center for Basque Studies of the University of Nevada, Reno is now accepting applications for the William A. Douglass Distinguished Scholar Award for the academic year 2010–2011. The Douglass Scholar must be a specialist in some aspects of Basque Studies and will be chosen on the basis of his/her contribution to Basque Studies and consistent record of research, achievement and scholarly innovation. For 2010-2011, they are seeking a specialist in Basque History. The deadline for completed applications is January 15th, 2010.

The San Francisco Basque Cultural Center hosted the 34th Annual NABO Pilota Championship

One of the most exciting games of the Championship was the Women’s paleta goma final, Evelyne Etcharren and Maitexa Cuburu (SFBCC) versus Michelle Saldubehere and Teresa Iparraguirre (KCBC) The San Francisco Basque Cultural Center hosted the 34th Annual NABO Pilota Championships over a two day period. It marked the 12th time the Basque Cultural Center hosted the 'Txapelketa'. Teams representing four Basque entities (Boise Fronton Association, Chino Basque Club, Kern County Basque Club, Basque Cultural Center) competed in eight categories in a final filled Saturday. NABO holds its annual pilota championship in conjunction with the Basque Cultural Center’s end of summer Basque festival and Championship Saturday saw good crowds watch eight finals.

A 'pastoral', theatrical play from Xiberoa, was performed in San Francisco, in memory of aita Tillous

High school students from Sohüta (Xiberoa) performing 'Euskamerikan artzain' at the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center The Basque Community from both the diaspora and Euskal Herria converged on the Basque Cultural Center in South San Francisco, California the weekend of August 28th-30th 2009. The gathering celebrated the life of Aita Tillous, the Basque Chaplain responsible for the Basque Community of the Western United States for the past 14 years. Aita Tillous passed away on March 30, 2009 in his native Euskal Herria. An advocate of all that is Basque, it was fitting that the weekend was full of pilota, dance, music, singing, bertsolaritza, pastoral from Xiberoa, and his ama hizkuntza (mother tongue). Euskera was present in all aspects. Crowds of over 600 people each day were entertained and helped celebrate his life.

Boise goes Basque during San Inazio Festival, next weekend

Oinkari dancers (photo Joseba Etxarri-EuskalKultura.com) Rhythmic tunes and the patter of dancing feet will reverberate from the Basque block (on Grove St. between 6th and Capitol streets), as thousands of people are expected to gather on Saturday, August 1, for the annual San Inazio Festival. It is a free event put on by the Euzkaldunak (Boise's Basque organization) and one that draws a sizable crowd. Originally the annual affair was conceived to honor St. Ignatius of Loyola, the patron saint of the Basque people, but has since evolved into an occasion to celebrate Basque history and traditions.

NABO Elections: Californian Valerie Arrechea of San Francisco is the new president of the organization (video)

New NABO president Valerie Etcharren Arrechea, elected July 24th, 2009 at the Reno, Nevada Convention (photo EuskalKultura.com) The annual North American Basque Organization (NABO) Convention took place last Friday in Reno, Nevada, bringing together almost forty Basque clubs and organizations from the United States and Canada, and marking the beginning of a new presidency for the institution. The previous president, Mary Gaztambide, did not run for reelection, which left Californian Valerie Etcharren Arrechea as the only candidate. Arrechea was elected in the first vote by unanimous vote, after being nominated by Kate Camino, president of Zazpiak Bat Basque Club of Reno.
