Venezuelan Basques, residing in the Basque Country, celebrated their 16th annual get together in Galdakao

Last Saturday's Venezuelan Basque gathering in Galdakao (photo EuskalKultura.com) The annual meeting that reunites members of the Basque diaspora of Venezuela and descents of Basques born in this Caribbean nation took place last Saturday in Galdakao, Bizkaia. The reunion helps to maintain friendships, renew ties and share interests between Venezuela and Euskadi. More than fifty people attended the event organized by the association Simon Bolivar, which also included the presentation of a gift and recognition of one of its veterans, Mª Carmen Garate de Atxurra, who is eighty years old.

Application period for this year’s Gaztemundu program opened April 18th; deadline to apply May 19, 2011

The Official Gazette of the Basque Country (EHAA-BOPV), Monday, April 18, 2011 issue Information regarding applying for this year’s Gaztemundu program was provided in the Basque country's April 18th official bulletin. The program is open to all between the ages of 18 and 30. In addition to the usual requirements, this year’s candidates must also submit a written proposal on how to run a Basque entity, including reference to its financing and programming of its activities. The dates for Gaztemundu 2011 are October 23 to November 6, coinciding with the World Congress of Basque Communities. The deadline for applications ends on May 19, 2011.

Homage and presentation in Bilbao of 'Traductor de Sueños por Babilonia,' posthumous book of Sergio Oiarzabal

Bilbao will pay homage to Sergio Oiarzabal, National Prize Miguel Hernández-Winning Basque Poet, on the 17th of February at the Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao 'Traductor de Sueños por Babilonia,' posthumous book of Sergio Oiarzabal, will be presented tomorrow at the Bidebarrieta Library in Bilbao as part of a tribute that will start at 7:30pm. The writer died unexpectedly on Saturday June 12th at his home in Bilbao. He was 36. Poets, writers, musicians and friends will attend the homage and presentation of the book. Sergio Oiarzabal was brother of Pedro Oiarzabal a historian and researcher specialized in Basque diaspora studies, currently working at the Deusto University. Both the tribute and the presentation are open to the public.

The Navarrese group Berri Txarrak will begin a new tour through Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Canada

Gorka Urbizu, Galder Izagirre and David Gonzalez members of Berri Txarrak After making an Asian tour and after selling out several concerts in recent months throughout the Basque Country, the group Berri Txarrak will perform in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Canada in their upcoming February/March tour. The concerts will take place in Curitiba, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Bellavista, San Antonio, Santiago, México DF and Toronto; on the 25th, 26th and 27th of February and the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 10th of March respectively.

Conference on Basque Whaling in the Seventeenth Century at the University of California, Santa Barbara

Basque teachers from all over the United States gathered in the Euskara Workshop 2010 in Boise

It was a long-day class filled with knowledge and fun, taught by Izaskun Kortazar, the NABO Basque Language Coordinator in the United States. Basque language teachers came from all over the country (Florida, Nevada, California and Denver) and joined Boise teachers and students from BSU to learn about Basque grammar.

Basque author Kirmen Uribe will talk about his latest internationally acclaimed novel in New York

Basque poet and writer Kirmen Uribe Basque author Kirmen Uribe (Ondarroa, Bizkaia, 1970) will participate in various literary events in the next days in New York, including a couple of talks with writer Iñaki Uriarte in Instituto Cervantes and Brown University on Monday November 15th, and his participation in the 7th Annual Festival of European Literature of New York on November 16th and 17th. The work of Uribe brought a “quiet revolution” to Basque literature, as expressed by the literary critic Jon Kortazar. In 2009 Uribe won the National Prize of Literature in Spain for his novel 'Bilbao-New York-Bilbao', that has been already translated to other languages like Spanish, Catalan and Galego, not yet to English.

In the right, Ana Busto's  'Cass' (2009) A selection of new and old works by Basque artist Ana Busto will be on display tomorrow in the opening of Ventana244 Art Space, in New York. The exhibit, titled 'Notes', combines the works of Busto, Anne Chu and Magaly Perez to generate a conversation about nature through art. Ana Busto Barrenetxea lives between the Basque Country and New York City. She has exhibited in the USA, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Peru, Canada and China.

Douglass Distinguished Scholar Award for the academic year 2011–2012. The Douglass Scholar must be a specialist in some aspects of Basque Studies and will be chosen on the basis of his/her contribution to Basque Studies and consistent record of research, achievement and scholarly innovation. For 2011-2012, they are seeking a specialist in sports. The deadline for completed applications is December 17, 2010.
