Ramon Barquin and Jose Neira winners of the Boise Euzkaldunak Mus Tournament, celebrated last Saturday

Izar Iribarren-Gorrindo, Esther Ciganda, and Tyler Smith Euzkaldunak held its local Mus tournament on Saturday, April 23, at the Basque Center in Boise. Seventeen teams participated with the winners being Ramon Barquin and Jose Neira. The local champions will now go on to represent Euzkaldunak at the NABO, national, Mus tournament in Fresno, California on June 11, 2011. The Fresno club will again be hosting the event at the Campos Farms.

Poster advertising Literaldia 11 Barcelona’s Basque club is once again co-hosting the Literaldia festival, this year marking its 11th edition. The festival annually presents a large and varied selection of contemporary Basque literature. This year’s event began with a bertso-afari (bertsolari dinner), and then during for four weeks, presentations, recitals, and round tables will take place on themes like “the imaginary Basque Country, “ or the treatment of gay characters in Basque literature. Among the authors that will participate are Kirmen Uribe, Anjel Lertxundi, Jabier Muguruza and poet Oier Guillian.

The University Iberoamericana of Santa Fe, Mexico inaugurates its first Basque culture week on Monday

Chef Mikel Alonso will participate at the Santa Fe Basque Cultural Week From May 2-5, 2011 the University Iberoamericana in Santa Fe, just outside Mexico City, will celebrate a Basque week featuring different aspects of the Basque culture such as gastronomy, art, architecture, business innovation and literature. Gorka Larrañaga, Basque language and culture professor at the university, announced the program of activities and invites the Basque-Mexican community to participate in the events.

Would you like to teach Basque culture in Argentina? You have until May 13th to sign up for Hator Hona 2011

In 2008, 23 Basque dancers from Necochea traveled to the Basque Country to return the visit of so many participants of Hator Hona (photo NecocheaEE) Necochea’s Basque center has organized another edition of “Hator Hona-Come to Argentina,” a cultural exchange program that provides opportunities for youth from Euskadi (also from other countries of the Diaspora, see the article) to come to Argentina and teach the Basque language, pelota, and dance in Necochea. This is the seventh edition of Hator Hona and it will take place from July 15 to August 7, 2011. The program is available to all between the ages of 18 and 30 who would like to live with the youth of Necochea and share their knowledge of the Basque culture with them. The deadline to apply is May 13th.

The Basque Diaspora was present once again at Sara’s Book Fair thanks to Euskalkultura.com

Euskalkultura.com’s stand at the 28th edition of the Sara Writers Meeting.  Joseba Etxarri is answering Mirentxu’s questions, a young eleven-year-old reader, who has family history in both California and Idaho in the US.  (Photo by Inazio Mujika Iraola). Last Monday, Easter Monday and a holiday in all of the Basque Country, is also the annual date for 'Sarako Idazleen Bitzarra' (Sara’s Basque Writers Meeting). This book fair reflects the literary and publishing activity, particularly in the three Basque Provinces in Iparralde, and this year celebrated its twenty-eighth gathering. In most cases, the authors themselves man the stands and take care of the readers directly, answering questions and conversing with them. This direct contact creates a unique relationship between the writers and readers.

The Euskal Echea Institute in Buenos Aires begins Monthly Organ Recitals including Basque Repertoire

The chapel of the Euskal Echea Institute in Buenos Aires The chapel of the Euskal Echea Institute in Buenos Aires is special not only because if its acoustics, but also because it is the only one with a “Kilgen & Son” organ in all of Argentina. These resources as well as the goal of providing a space for good music motivated the Institute to organize a concert series this year. The concerts will take place the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm, from April to September, and are open to the public.

Txikifest 2011, an opportunity to taste Basque Txakolin wine in Manhattan Eder Montero, originally from Bilbao, and his wife Alexandra Raij, chefs and owners of New York City's Txikito Basque restaurant, will host guest chefs in a friendly afternoon street fair atmosphere featuring street food inspired dishes paired with the Txakoli white wines of the Basque country. The event will take place next Sunday, May 1st from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.

Members of Euzkaldunak of Boise gathered at the Basque Center in celebration of the club's Anniversary

A table ready in Boise's Basque Center for Euzkaldunak Monthly Dinner Members of Euzkaldunak, the main Basque organization and Basque club of Boise, Idaho gathered on Saturday, April 16th, at the Basque Center facilities in downtown Boise to take part in the monthly dinner, celebrating the 62nd anniversary of this key institution, one of the biggest and most active among the ones in the American West. Saturday’s dinner was hosted by Aiztan Artean, a traditional Basque women's group that works under the umbrella of the Center, and prepared by chef Jesus Alcelay and his crew.

John Bieter at the Basque Museum in Boise John Bieter, Associate Professor at Boise State University's (BSU) Department of History, gave an educational presentation on 'Basque Migration to the American West' last Monday evening at the Basque Museum in downtown Boise. Even though the intent was to educate, the event often felt more like old friends reminiscing about those who had gone before them. Approximately sixty community members were in attendance.

About sixty people gathered last weekend at the Mountain Home Basque Park to take part in Korrika

Mountain Home Korrika participants On Sunday afternoon, Mountain Home, Idaho celebrated the Basque run Korrika in support of the Basque language. The 3-mile run was organized by the local Euskal Lagunak Basque Club. About sixty people of all ages and from different parts of the state gathered at the Mountain Home Basque Park to run or walk in honor of the Basque language. It was followed by a social hour and a potluck style picnic. "It was the first time Korrika took place here, and we are happy, we got a nice response," organizers said to EuskalKultura.com.
