Specialty plates celebrating Basque Culture failed to meet minimum sales thresholds and will no longer be available after July 1. The license plate - which features a sheep camp on the left and has "Basque" written at the bottom - had been available to Idaho drivers since 2006, after governor Dirk Kempthorne made it official. New plate programs get a three-year introductory period with no minimum sales requirement. After that, if sales, including renewals, fall below 1,000 in any two consecutive years, the Idaho Department of Transportation (ITD) is required to eliminate the plate.

Last month we learned that the Nevada legislature was considering several budget cuts proposed by the state’s Republican governor Sandoval, which would have negatively impacted the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno campus. However, lawmakers were able to reach a budget agreement in the final hours before the Legislature adjourned for the remainder of the year. Luckily, the cuts were not as deep to higher education as first expected. This is extremely good news for the Center for Basque Studies, as they would have had to become self-sufficient if the Governor's original proposal had been approved.
