The latest chair established by the Etxepare Institute, a subsidiary of the Basque Government’s Ministry of Culture, has been named for the Basque Country’s most widely translated author, Bernardo Atxaga, at the City University of New York (CUNY). Several events have been organized to mark the occasion beginning on September 9th and concluding with the official presentation of the chair on September 16th. All events are open to the public excepting a mini-seminar that is reserved for registered students only, or those with special permission from the program’s Executive Officer.

Following the annual Basque picnic celebrations in Elko, Nevada, and the Southern California Basque Club's one in Chino, California, the Gooding, Idaho Basque Association will celebrate its annual picnic on Sunday, July 17, at the Gooding County Fairgrounds. Participants will have the opportunity to taste delicious Basque food in the company of friends and family while enjoying an evening of Basque culture. There will be dancing, weight carrying and lifting contests, with categories for men, women and children.

“The Running of the Bullshitters” took place last Saturday night in San Francisco, California. San Francisco has celebrated the 'Running of the Bulls' in their very special way since 1996. It’s known as “The Running of The Bullshitters” and people are faced with six human-bulls from one pub to another. San Fermin’s Txupinazo (or small fireworks to kick-off the celebration) took place in Pamplona earlier this week, on July 6. The fireworks signal the beginning of a week full of festivities, food, drinks, people coming from every corner of the world, and of course, the emotions from the famous Running of the Bulls. While San Fermines are now in full swing, and San Francisco also enjoyed its own share of emotions.

Idaho’s capital is hosting the first Barnetegi (Basque immersion school) in the USA for Basque language students who desire to become teachers of Euskera, the Basque language. The Barnetegi has been organized by NABO’s Basque coordinator, Izaskun Kortazar, and it welcomed 15 students from Canada and several US states. These type of training of the Basque language is common in countries like Argentina or Uruguay. Students practice their speaking skills 6 hours a day for a week. Classes started in Boise last Saturday, July 9th and will go until the following Saturday, July 16th.

The 48th edition of Elko’s Basque National Festival took place over the 4th of July three-day-weekend. It was a special year as it brought back one of the festival’s favorites, the “Running from the Bulls”, which took place at the Fairgrounds and served as the Festival kick-off on Friday evening. People wearing T-shirts sporting the “Got Bulls” tagline could be seen all around town. This year’s theme was "Besarkada handi bat for our troops" (One Big Hug For Our Troops). Nicholas Beitia, member of the US Marines Corps and son of Elko’s Basque Club president, Fred Beitia, served as Grand Marshall. Locals and visitors alike enjoyed a variety of activities throughout the weekend, including a parade, Basque dancing, Basque games and competitions, jota and irrintzi contests, handball games, and of course, Basque food.

Paulino “Paul” Zatica’s death comes days after we learned of another Basque icon’s passing, Domingo Aguirre, from Mountain Home, Idaho. Paul was born in Jordan Valley, Oregon, to Joe Zatica (from Ispaster, Bizkaia) and Ignacia Zatica (from Arteaga, Bizkaia). He was a US Navy veteran and a graduate of the University of Denver. Just as Domingo did for the Elmore County Rodeo, Paul had the honor to serve as Grand Marshal for the 2006 Owyhee County Fair and Rodeo Parade. Zatica opened his first store in Homedale, Idaho in 1955. Today, there are a total of eight stores throughout the state of Idaho, now run from the corporate office in Homedale by two of his sons, Stan and Steve.

The second week of Udaleku for kids ages 10 to 12 started this weekend in San Francisco, after the first group of kids, 13 to 15 years old celebrated their final show on Saturday. Every year NABO sponsors and a Basque club hosts Udaleku, a two-week Basque Culture Summer Camp. Participants have an opportunity to learn more about their Basque heritage while having fun and making new friends. The Udaleku not only helps to keep Basque culture relevant to the younger generations, but it has also forged links between the different Basque communities. San Francisco is hosting the Udaleku this year, which underwent a format change for the first time since its inception in the early 1970s, from a two-week camp to two one-week camps.

Boise Basque dancing group, the Oinkaris, and local Basque music band, Amuma Says No, are spending their last days in Boise getting ready for their much-anticipated trip to the Basque Country. They will spend nine days visiting several Basque cities, where they will be giving performances and meeting with local Basque dancing groups. This trip is crucial for maintaining the authenticity of the group’s repertoire, as well as forming and maintaining connections with native Basque dance groups. The Oinkaris will arrive in Bilbao on July 2, where they will stay for the first 5 days. They will then travel to Donostia for the next 4. On July 11 the group will head back to the United States.

This summer Boise will be home to several Basque youngsters thanks to a couple of different programs spearheaded both locally and from the Basque Country. On the one hand, young Boise resident Kyle Harbacheck is hoping to make the first exchange program for teenagers between Boise and the Basque Country a reality. On the other hand, Benan Oregi, principal at Olabide Ikastola in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country) and well-known for his work with the Direction of Relations with the Basque Communities Abroad, has organized an exchange program between Olabide and a couple of Boise organizations, namely St. John´s and Bishop Kelly High Schools.

Basque Government spokesperson, Idoia Mendia, announced yesterday, at the Governing Council’s weekly Tuesday meeting, that approval has been given to open a representative office in Boise, part of the central delegation of Euskadi in North America, whose main headquarters is in New York. Mendia also indicated that the Government will soon appoint the person who will serve as the governmental representative, a position that has been vacant since the resignation, two years ago, of the former incumbent, Aitor Sotes, who was appointed by the Ibarretxe government.
