The Euskaldunak Basque club of Quebec is going to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its founding with a huge party this weekend. The Basque club will also be the site of NABO’s fall meeting, the federation of North American Basque clubs, of which Euskaldunak is a member. This marks the first time that a NABO meeting will take place outside of the US, and will bring delegates to Montreal from several Basque clubs. These delegates will not only bring their work ethic with them, but also their party ethic.

The singer Mikel Markez will be presenting his new songs to the London Basque Society on September 24. The musician from Gipuzkoa was also in London last year, invited by the Basque center, and the members are anxiously awaiting another visit. The center will begin the new semester with the concert, after having celebrated its first Mintzapraktika (day of conversation practice) of the summer which took place in Whitstable on the coast and whose photos can be found on the internet.

Last Saturday the gathering of Basques who worked as sheepherders in the US between 1940 and 1970 reunited more that 700 people in the towns of Eugi and Zubiri, in Navarre. It was a very emotional day, and in some cases the participants hadn’t seen each other in decades, with more than one ending in tears. During the festivities the association “Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan” (Basque Sheepherders in America) was officially presented. This association was created in order to continue the work that was begun at this annual gathering. Laura Igantzi, president of the EAA, told EuskalKultura.com about some of the association’s projects: encouraging research on the influence of this emigration in Navarre, and organizing a trip to the US, potentially to Jaialdi 2015.

The Comic Convention that will take place next month in New York is one of the most important get-togethers of cartoonists and comic book fanatics in the world. This year, Joanes, a Basque whaler from the 16th century, will be among the thousands of superheroes and characters drawn in ink, presenting the second part of his adventures in Terranova. Cantankerous, foul-mouthed and a drunkard, Joanes is not the kind of hero that we are used to, but his adventures among the natives of the New World will transform him (though not entirely). Guillermo Zubiaga, a Basque in the Big Apple, is the author of this Basque-American comic, a series that is only available in English published in collaboration with the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Last Friday, the Basque-Brazilian lawyer, Ana Luiza Etchaluz, presented her book 'Alma Basca' (The Basque Soul) at an event organized by Itapeviko Euskal Etxea during Sao Paulo’s Basque Week. In the book, Etchaluz recounts the process of finding her roots, intermingled with notes about Basque culture and life in the Basque Country. The public showed great interest in the presentation and the attorney from Porto Alegre explained that the book is helping many Brazilians with Basque surnames to discover their origins. Etchaluz is currently working on the creation of a new euskal etxea in Brazil, in Porto Alegre.

Lagunt eta Maita, in Pau, France, is one of the world’s largest euskal etxeas with over 1,100 members. This thanks to the interest in Basque culture and the large number of Basques that live in the area. Pau is located just outside the Basque Country and neighbors Zuberoa. The association begins this fall with much anticipated news, the opening of its new bigger locale this Monday that will facilitate hosting more activities. They are also looking for a Basque teacher to be in charge of their language classes.

Do you live outside of the Basque Country but you want your kids to be able to learn, practice, or above all have fun in Basque? The following website could be really helpful in all those areas. It is called Marrazkiak.99k.org and offers the possibility to download children’s films and cartoons in Euskara. Currently there are approximately 4,500 files. Among those are series like “Doraemon,” “Kodea: Lyoko,” and “'Pokemon,” (if you have kids you know what we are talking about) and classics like “Dragoi Bola,” “Arturo Erregea,” or “Scooby Doo.”

The Basque Center of Barcelona wants to break the 500 member barrier, and so to do this, they have launched a membership campaign, entitled “Posa’t la txapela tu també!” (Put the txapela on too). The campaign has two objectives: the first one economic, since the membership dues sustain the club; and the second, to let people know of the association’s existence, inviting people to get to know and enjoy the Basque culture. The center is opening its doors today, coinciding with the new semester. This week they are hosting concerts, talks and other activities just prior to la Diada, the Catalan national holiday that takes place on Sunday.

This Saturday’s event, that hopes to gather a thousand participants in Eugi and Zubiri, will mark the sixth edition that honors Basque sheepherders who worked in the United States. Those featured will be the herders from the Valleys of Erro and Esteribar, and the Association 'Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan' (Basque Herders in America) will be officially presented. The event includes a complete program including the reproduction of a sheep camp. “It’s a very exciting, emotional day, especially since you get a chance to see friends that you haven’t seen for 30 years,” explains pelotari Fernando Goñi, who is part of the organizational committee.

As we have done in the past with Basque clubs and associations, this time we would like to provide a tool that facilitates interaction and the ability to follow Basque dance groups more closely in the Diaspora. We’re talking about a list of profiles created by the groups themselves on various social networks, as well as websites. Facebook, Google, Basque club websites… here we’ve gathered different ways that the dancers in the Diaspora use to transmit their passion and their activities to the world. Do you know of a website or profile? Please help us complete this list that can be very valuable to all.
