Members of Bordeaux’s Basque club were very satisfied with their participation in Heritage Days held September 16-18, in the French city. Eskualdunen Biltzarrra took Basque culture to the streets and involved many people in its activities: cultural workshops, dance, talks and a photo exhibit. There was even a trio of txalaparta players from Pamplona, Hutsun, and their exhibitions aroused the public’s curiosity, who was also encouraged to participate in the workshops that introduced them to the ancient instrument. There was even a group of Basque people among them who were passing through. “Hopefully they’ll become members of the club!” commented David Mugica, club president, to EuskalKultura.com.

The camaraderie between the Basques and the Catalans is well known, this time, it has reached as far as the antipodes, with Gure Txoko Basque club’s celebration this past September 11th of “la Diada” Catalonia’s National Holiday. This is the second year that the event has taken place, and it seems like it will soon become one of the club’s annual events humorously referred to as “Liada Catalana.” The ambience during the event was very festive and so members have unanimously decided to celebrate it again next year.

For the first time ever NABO (North American Basque Organizations) held a meeting on the East Coast. Apparently the distance didn’t discourage many of the delegates as over half of the now forty plus membership clubs were represented at the meeting. The offer couldn’t have been more enticing either since Euskaldunak of Quebec had planned a wonderful weekend coinciding with the club’s 15th anniversary. Delegates were treated to tours, concerts, traditional food and great hospitality.

The historic label Esan Ozenki published, among others, albums by Negu Gorriak and now, ten years after its disappearance, its leaders have decided to distribute its catalog online. This month folks will be able to listen to it for free on Spotify. Even though it had been dissolved for years, Negu Gorriak still has a lot of pull among Basques in the Diaspora, especially those in Mexico. That is exactly where its singer, Fermin Muguruza, will be at the end of the month. The singer will participate in the Documentary Festival DOCS DF and present his series “Next Music Station,” a sound map of the Arab world made by the channel Al Jazeera. He will do the same this week at Donostia’s Zinemaldia.

The writer Bernardo Atxaga (Asteasu, 1957) opened a window last Friday at City University of New York. This window will shed light on both sides of the glass not only by presenting the Basque culture in Manhattan, but also by bringing some diversity and boundless energy of New York to Euskal Herria. This is the goal of the Bernardo Atxaga Chair in Basque Literature and Linguistics, initiated by the Etxepare Basque Institute and thanks to whom; many Basque writers will be able to give courses in the Big Apple during the academic year.
