The Third annual Popular Culture and Book Fair took place in the Argentinean province and city of San Juan from September 27th through October 2. This year’s edition was dedicated to Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Argentina’s 7th President, esteemed political innovator and writer, on the occasion of the bicentennial of his birth. The fair’s motto was, “In the Bicentennial of Sarmiento, integration and educational pluralism,” and served to bring a large number of schools, artists, libraries and institutions together whose daily task is the transmission of culture. The local Basque community was also highlighted at this event with a stand that exhibited “The Basque Glances of Sarmiento.” The stand was organized by the Basque club in conjunction with its Pio Baroja Library. The fair took place at the Trinidad Athletic Club and was visited by large crowds throughout the six days.

Once again a great time was had by everyone at McBean Park on Saturday. Iparreko Ibarra held its annual besta that included mus tournaments, dance performances, children’s activities, a weight carrying competition great food and camaraderie. In the evening folks were treated to music by the Jean Flesher and Rene Caballero band. Congressman John Garamendi, California’s 10th district representative was also in attendance.

This year’s International Book Fair in Frankfurt Germany begins today, and as every year, the Basque book publishing industry will represent at a stand organized by the Basque Government and the Etxepare Basque Institute. The Association of Basque Language Editors and Euskadi’s Publishers Guild will also be present aiming to increase the presence of Basque books in international markets. In addition, writers Jon Arretxe and Fernando Morillo will also be present tomorrow and the next day. Day after tomorrow both will speak about the current situation of Basque literature with Mari Jose Olaziregi, director of the Promotion and Diffusion of Basque at the Etxepare Basque Institute.

EuskalKultura.com will start distributing its bulletin in English this Thursday, so subscribe now. Until recently it was only possible to read the English versions of some of the articles published, but it wasn’t possible to receive an entire English edition. Tell all of your English-speaking friends that they too can get the weekly bulletin delivered to their e-mail, something that those in the English speaking diaspora have been waiting for, for some time.

The Lehendakari, Patxi López, is leading a visit to the east coast this Friday on which he is accompanied by representatives of one hundred Basque businesses and institutions. The main purpose of the trip is to facilitate internationalization of Basque companies in the U.S. but the Lehendakari will also hold high level meetings with technological centers. On Saturday, Pati López will meet the Basque community at New York’s Basque clubhouse, and on Thursday the 20th of October he will do same with the Basque community in Washington DC.

The goal of this project presented by FEVA (Federation of Basque Entities in Argentina) to its Basque club members is to optimize the use of the clubs’ resources that are spread out throughout the country. The spirit of “Basque Host,” is to offer a warm welcome and “familiar faces” to those who for one reason or another, work or study, need to move from one place to another. The proposal is already underway and in order for it to work, only two pieces of information need to be linked: the traveler’s information and the business services that are somehow linked to the Basque clubs at their destinations.

Over the next few days the “EuskalKonplu” series, organized by the Basque department at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, will provide the possibility to see various Basque films, as well as speak with some of their creators in person. Artists such as director Montxo Armendariz, writer Arantxa Urretabizkaia, or the actor/director Xabier Elorriaga will participate in seminars on the films that make up the series. Asier Altuna will also be joining them in Madrid, director of the documentary “Bertsolari,” that debuted at Donostia’s latest Film Festival. EuskalKultura.com spoke with Karlos Cid Abasolo, Basque professor at the university and organizer of the series.

The exhibit “Geroa eta Itxaropena” (Future and Hope) by the Basque-Extremaduran photographer Angela Mejias will be on display at New York’s Basque club from October 2 through the 15th. The exhibit is composed of 60 images that show aspects and moments of life in the Basque culture. The show began its North American tour thanks to Quebec’s Euskal Etxea and the Basque Cultural Institute of Iparralde. It now seeks to continue its journey through other Basque clubs in the area.

Next weekend, taking advantage of the Monday holiday (in Argentina), the XIX Festival of Communities will take place in San Pedro. In the same spirit as prior editions, the hundreds of locals and tourists can enjoy the various cultural exhibits over the three days. Once again the Basque club will represent the Basque community which will also include a performance by a group of dantzaris on the festival’s main stage, as well as screenings of short films in the cultural activities tent. During the three days people will also be able to enjoy typical dishes at “Ongi Etorri’s” stand.

Beginning next Monday, Medellin’s Basque club will celebrate its II Basque week, in which the club aims to disseminate and make their fellow Colombians more aware of their Basque culture. Activities will begin on Monday and will run through Thursday. Among them are conferences on Picasso’s Guernica, Basque poetry, Basque mythology, a screening of short films and an art exhibit. In addition, they will also show the Basque Club’s activities through photographs.
