Gaztemundu 2011: Thirty youth from the Diaspora are in Gasteiz being trained on Basque club management

Argentinian participants in Gaztemundu 2011 The youth from all over the Diaspora participating in this year’s Gaztemundu program have been in Gasteiz since Sunday. There are thirty in all, boys and girls, from twenty six Basque clubs in six different countries. During their two week stay in the Basque Country they will participate in workshops on how to run a Basque club, as well as participate in the 5th World Congress of Basque Collectivities that takes place in Donostia from November 2-5, 2011. Gaztemundu has created a blog, where participants can publish pictures, and chronicle their impressions and experiences.

There is still time to submit nominations for Eusko Ikaskuntza’s ENE Award 2011

If so, then you can nominate it for Eusko Ikaskuntza’s ENE Award 2011 that recognizes entities in the Diaspora for their outstanding contribution in this area. Nominations can be sent via email with a summary of the group’s activities and merits. The nomination deadline is November 25th and the winner will be announced on December 3rd, coinciding with the International Day of the Basque Language.

After the success of the genealogy workshops in Boise and Homedale, the HEAB would like to extend the opportunity to other clubs

Cristina Castillo and Asier Romero visiting the Idaho State Historical Archive (photo Cenarrusa Foundation) Two representatives of the Historic Ecclesiastic Archive of Bizkaia (HEAB) participated in two genealogy workshops in Homedale and Boise, Idaho on October 13th and 15th respectively. During the workshops the two technicians taught the groups how to look for information and certificates of origin on the archive’s database. “During the workshops we heard ‘oh! and ah!’ each time someone would find something new,” Cristina Castillo told EuskalKultura.com. Now the archive is ready to extend these workshops to other Basque clubs so that the Basques in the diaspora can take advantage of all the possibilities that the database offers.

“Lagunt eta Maita” Basque club in Pau, France is urgently seeking to find two Basque teachers

Lagunt eta Maita's frontpage and logo Pau’s “Lagunt eta Maita” Basque club would like to start offering Basque courses but to date has only found one teacher. The club has forty students enrolled and so needs two more teachers in order to accommodate that number of students. Lessons take place once a week, on Mondays, and so the club is looking for two Basque speakers that can share their talents so that this group of forty can continue learning Basques. Teachers will be paid for their service and prior experience is not necessary since HABE will provide both educational materials and training support.

Kate Camino honored at UNR’s first home football game in front of 25,000 spectators

Kate Camino being honored on the field at UNR's first football game (Photo Argaia) On October 8th, Kate Camino was honored at the University of Nevada’s first home football game against its rival UNLV. Camino was honored as part of the Athletic Department’s Campus Spotlight, a program to highlight the achievements of selected students, faculty and staff on the University of Nevada campus during each of its home football games. The program takes advantage of the crowds drawn to make the community aware of people and events at UNR that they may not be aware of otherwise. Kate was recognized on the occasion of her receiving NABO’s Bizi Emankorra, life achievement, award this year.

Basque will be represented at the 2011 Language Show that begins tomorrow in London

Visitors at a stand during last year's edition (photo TheLanguageShow) From October 21st through the 23rd the Etxepare Basque Institute will participate in the 2011 Language Show, one of the most important linguistic fairs where Basque will share the stage with languages from all over the world. The Etxepare Basque Institute will be there with its “Basque, Show Yourself to the World” stand among the other 150 invitees to the event where languages, culture and communication will be at the forefront.

Euskadi plays a leading role in the fiestas of Patraix, as Julian Celaya was invited to give the keynote speech

Julian Celaya, center, inaugurates the photo exhibit of traditional Basque tools in Patraix, prior to delivering the festival’s official keynote speech.  The Valencian town of Patraix, a city of 60,000 inhabitants, hosted its annual festival this year dedicated to the Basque Country. As such, the festival began on October 7th and continued through October 11th with Julian Celaya, Eusko Jaurlaritza’s Director of Relations with Citizens and Basque Collectivities, acting as the special town crier (progenrero). The dance group Ereintza from Errenteria, also participated during the official inauguration with a Basque dance performance that was attended by more than 2,000 people, and the Choir from Madrid’s Basque club also performed a well-received concert. Laurak Bat, Valencia’s Navarrese Basque club also collaborated closely in the organization of the event.

Lehendakari Patxi Lopez presented Canal Vasco in New York now that it can be seen in the US and Canada

Itziar Albisu, President of New York's Euskal Etxea, welcoming Patxi Lopez to the nearly century-old Basque club (photo Irekia) Lehendakari Lopez began a trade mission in Dallas and on the US East Coast last Friday, with the hopes of strengthening commercial ties between Basque and American companies. Among other activities, Lopez visited the New York Basque Club on Saturday where he met with representatives of the Basque community there. Lopez was accompanied by Alberto Surio, director of EITB, and presented Canal Vasco, ETB’s international signal that can now be seen in the US and Canada via Satellite Galaxy 23. Lopez pointed out that Canal Vasco can become a “means of communication” between the Basques on both sides of the Atlantic.

Euskadi’s team #1 won the XXXIV World Mus Championship of Basque Collectivities

Antonio Vicente and Angel Ribero, Euskadi’s team # 1, Mus champions second year in a row (photo Kepa Etchandy/Ibaifoto.com) This Saturday prizes were handed out as part of the official closing ceremonies of the World Mus Championships of Basque Collectivities that had been taking place in Anglet, Lapurdi since October 8th. This year’s winners were Antonio Vicente and Angel Ribero, Euskadi team #1, who also won last year’s championships in Los Angeles. Second place winners were Julien Amestoy and Fabrice Etchart from France.

NABO’s Basque teachers attended their fourth training workshop last weekend in Boise

Last year’s workshop attendees from left to right: Goisalde Jausoro, Gloria Lejardi, Aitzol Azurtza, Anita Anacabe, Mikel Oteiza, Itxaso Kaiero, Bernadette Leonis, Izaskun Kortazar and Ibon Izurieta Teaching Basque is progressing in North America, thanks to the efforts of NABO and HABE, and the dedication of their teachers and students. Last weekend a group of teachers from various US Basque clubs got together in Boise where they participated in a training workshop. The goal of the course is to exchange experiences and to learn how to make classes more dynamic and efficient. This is the fourth workshop of this kind, where, among other things, NABO’s Euskara coordinator, Izaskun Kortazar, reviewed work done over the last four years (2008-2011) and evaluated the goals that were achieved.
