Great atmosphere at the Basque Italian festival, that wraps up tomorrow with a concert by Xabier Montoia

Great atmosphere at Pintxo night where attendees danced after tasting Asier Oyarzabal’s creations (photo Euskara.it) The Basque community in Rome continues to surprise the residents of the Eternal city with its activities, always original and striking. The latest is the “@roma basco-euskara” festival that began the end of November and will end this weekend. During this time the festival has become a meeting place and exchange for Basque, Italian and other international artists and spectators, merging pintxos and bertsolaritza, with American singer-songwriters with Basque-Roman groups, bertsolaris with Italian poets…this weekend comes the fireworks with a concert by Xavier Montoia, Mursego from Eibar, and Ibon Rodriguez with the local band Jorona.

Santo Tomas celebrations have made their way to New York, thanks to the Eusko Etxea

Txistorra, a traditional treat on the feast of Saint Thomas On December 21st the feast of Santo Tomas (Saint Thomas) will be celebrated throughout the Basque Country and in places like Donostia and Bilbao thousands will dress in traditional clothing and enjoy traditional dishes like pintxos or taloa with txistorra. The feast is also celebrated in the Diaspora in places like Barcelona, Madrid…and this year also in New York. The festivities in the Big Apple will take place on this Saturday, at the Basque club, that will also include a visit from the Olentzero with gifts for the younger set.

The Basque Government announces four internship possibilities in the US (1), Argentina (1) and in Vitoria (2)

Decree regarding the specialization scholarships The Basque Government published the call for four grants specializing in the area of Basque collectivities and Basque centers abroad. The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country included the call for these grants for the 2012 year in yesterday’s edition. The grants are for 24 months and internships will take place at the office of the Secretary General of Foreign Action in Vitoria-Gasteiz (2) and at Basque Government delegations or facilities in both Argentina (1) and in the United States (1). Eligible applicants may be citizens of the Basque Autonomous Community or members of any Basque Government recognized Basque club/entity. The deadline to apply is January 16, 2012.

The Festival of Basque Choreographers brought the sea to Berlin through dance, poetry, music and bertsos

A moment from "Batteleku batean," by Mikel Aristegui at the Basque Choreographers festival (photo Volker Roloff) “Basques looking at the sea,” was the central theme of the second edition of the Festival of Basque Choreographers in Berlin that took place this last weekend in the German capital. Over the three days, a dozen dancers and Basque artists evoked in the German audience sensations caused by the sea, through dance, music, poetry and bertsolaritza. Seven Basque companies presented the latest from the world of dance in the Basque Country including new pieces created on the spot, mixing dance with the other arts. Mikel Aristegui, event promoter, told EuskalKultura.com that given the success of the event, a similar event may take place next year in London.

First steps taken towards a new Basque club: Brussels Euskal Etxea promotes Basque Culture in the heart of Europe

Members of the Basque club choir "Txalaparta" (photo EE) In November of 2010 a new Basque center was formally created in Brussels by the Basque community in Belgium and was named Bruselako Euskal Etxea. The entity currently has a small membership, but has already started taking steps to organize its first activities: Basque contests, tables of conversation and a choir ‘Txalaparta,” for example. Looking to the future the group would like to be recognized by the Basque Government and eventually develop a pilota program.

International competition to compose the Ibilaldia 2012 theme and a Love Letter contest in Basque

Ibilaldia 2012 presentation On May 27th the Trapagaran Ibiladia will be celebrated, the festival in support of the Ikastolas in Bizkaia organized each year by the itxaropena Ikastola. As every year, a song will serve as the soundtrack of the festivities but this year Itxaropena has decided to organize an international competition in order to pick this year’s song. The only condition is that it be in Basque and that it contains the words “ibiladia” and “ikastola.” The deadline for submissions is January 12th and a jury will choose the five best songs, among which the winner will be chosen by popular vote. On a similar note, we have learned of the XX Love Letters Contest in Basque from Bergara.

Argentina and Mexico surprised everybody at the IV World Pilota Championships in Bilbao

Argentina (blue) and Basque Country pilotaris (green) at the awards ceremony (photo WPC) The finals of the IV World Pilota Championships were played this last weekend in Bilbao, where one could see great games and points made as well as some games that were less competitive. Most of the participants were of very high caliber and those that deserve special recognition are the surprising teams Argentinean and Mexican teams in Pilota cuero, and Pilota Goma respectively. In the women’s division the players from Euskadi showed their prowess. Organizers were pleased with the tournament saying, “the stands were filled and we saw champions from several countries.”

NABO clubs also celebrate the International Day of Euskera from Boise to Montreal

Boise's Txantxangorriak performing at this year's International Euskera Day celebration (photo IKortazar) The Basque communities in various US states and Quebec also joined in on the celebration of the International Day of Euskera, a day that gains more and more followers in the Diaspora each year. With that the number of Basque students is also increasing in North America, and they, along with other club members are committed to celebrating the Day of Euskera (the Basque language) throughout the year with their daily effort. These were at the forefront at these fun activities: Basque karaoke in Boise; a poetry reading and a Basque Christmas Carol workshop in New York; and a workshop on Bertsolaritza in Montreal.

Christmas dinner at Valencia’s Basque club and National Pilota Tournament at the Caracas Eusko Etxea

Photo of Valencia-Carabobo's Christmas Party (photo Carabobo EE) We’ve learned about activities from Venezuela, one a celebration of the holidays and the other a sporting event. Eusko Etxea of Carabobo, the Basque club in Valencia, celebrated the International Day of Euskera on December 3rd with its traditional Christmas party, where the children sang traditional Christmas carols in Basque like Hator Hator. On the other hand Eusko etxea of Caracas is being the site for the XVIII National Games of Venezuela, from December 10th through the 15th where various types of pilota were played.

Activities like the anniversary dinner and an art workshop exhibit ended the year at the Salto Basque club, Uruguay

Salto Basque club members at the Immigrant Day festivities (photo SaltokoEuskaldunenTaldea) Many different activities have been organized during the last few weeks by the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea, as the grand finale to the year’s activities organized by the Basque collectivity of Salto in the northwest of Uruguay. The entity also celebrated another anniversary of its founding, the traditional exhibit from its Art workshop, celebrated the International Day of Euskera and participated in the Immigrants’ parade as well as hosting a fun Basque night.
