London’s Basque society ended the year in an enviable fashion celebrating the month of December with a number of warm activities with great atmosphere. One of the year-end events was the Olentzero dinner that was celebrated on December 17th and attended by the Olentzero and Mari Domingi who handed out gifts to the youngest members of the entity. In addition, a group of trikitilaris from Algorta came and surprised them during the evening, with a “prepoteo” through the streets of the city. Another notable event took place on December 10th with a concert by singer Mikel Urdangarin, and the week before, the International Day of Euskera was celebrated with a fun “mintzapraktika” where members were able to practice Basque in a fun way. The center has published a number of videos of these and other activities.

North Queensland’s Euskal Etxea, in Townsville Australia, celebrated the end of the year with a Christmas party that was attended by 130 members. Among those attending was the Olentzero who handed out gifts to the littlest members of the club. The party also included a last minute guest: a tremendous downpour, something common in this part of Australia at the beginning of their rainy season. But everyone put on a brave face, and the Basque-Australian children had a great time splashing around in the puddles. For its part, the little ones of the Basque club in Madrid also received gifts from the Olentzero, as you can see in the video included here.

Today is Santo Tomas (Saint Thomas Day), a traditional feast day that is celebrated in some parts of the Basque Country around the Christmas market and by eating txistorra. New York’s Eusko Etxea celebrated last weekend, with a resounding success, gathering many people in its clubhouse in Brooklyn. The Olentzero was even there, and managed to attract a large group of txikis and their parents; while the call of the St. Thomas fair did the same with the club’s young and not so young. The festivities lasted until dawn. There was also talo and pintxos of txistorra; as well as cider and Rioja wine provided by the Txikito restaurant and the white bearded Olentzero played with style by Iban Ubarretxena.

Everyone knows that Olentzero usually works on December 24th, handing out gifts to all of the boys and girls in the Basque Country, but lately he’s been working over time in various places around the world where there are also Basque kids, invited by various Basque clubs. On December 11th he was in Australia, invited by the Gure Txoko Basque club. The Basques in Sydney got together as every year at Centennial Park where the smallest ones, nervous and excited, waited for the coal maker to arrive. When he did, he passed out many presents to the amazed children and young and old alike enjoyed a beautiful day outdoors in the Australian summer.
