The 15th Forum of Iberian Studies will take place June 20-22, 2012 at the University of Oxford where cinema, literature, and national peninsular identity will be debated, including the Basque case. The Basque language, besides being a subject of debate, will also be, for the first time used at the meeting. The university has made a call for papers to any researcher or expert who would like to participate in the forum. The deadline to submit an abstract of the proposed paper is February 3, 2012.

Topagunea, the federation of associations in favor of Euskera, has organized the 9th edition of the audiovisual circuit Laburbira, and as in previous year, invites Basque clubs and centers in the Diaspora to join in. This edition’s program includes seven works in Euskera, three fiction shorts, two animated shorts, one video-clip, one documentary, and one short in Galician with Basque subtitles. The screenings will take place between February 29th and April 4th. Those centers wishing to participate have until the end of the month to register. In previous editions Basque centers in Barcelona, Paris, London, Rome and Shanghai have participated.

The New Year has begun but we’re still hearing about the Olentzero’s visits to various Basque centers and clubs around the world. The mythic coal maker announcing Christmas in the Basque tradition and making children’s dreams come true in Basque communities all over the world, once again, traveled millions of miles to visit them in person. Following are some images of two of these visits in the US at Washington DC’s Basque club and also at Boise’s Ikastola among others.

Holiday greetings and good wishes are still coming to EuskalKultura.com from our readers, friends and from Basque clubs and entities in general around the world. As each year, EuskalKulturacom will stop publishing for a while returning after San Sebastian Day (January 20th), a holiday and 'Danborrada Day' in Donostia, where our headquarters in the Basque Country is found. The year is going and the majority of Basque clubs close their doors during these holidays, in order to return refreshed in January. This is also the case in Shanghai, where many of the young Basques that live and work in this Chinese city return to Euskal Herria in order to spend some time with their families and celebrate the season. Even so, the Basque club also prepared some events for those who remain in town, and sent us their activity calendar for 2012. As usual, there is no shortage of original and fun ideas. Anyone going to Shanghai this year should get their schedules ready!

The Basque Government published today, December 29th in its Official Bulletin, the call for loans to Basque centers in order to help those in extreme need who belong to the Basque Collectivities abroad during 2012. The total amount available is 202,000 euros and the deadline to apply is February 29th. As previous calls, Basque centers will be in charge of sending applications so those wishing to apply should get in touch with the Basque club/center in their area.

The program “Zinema Euskaraz” supported by the Basque Government has published a long list of movies in Basque or produced in the Basque Country, at Kulturklik.com that can be seen online during the holidays. Anyone who wishes can watch a movie simply by choosing a title and clicking on the appropriate link to watch it for free via the streaming program on your computer. The films can’t be downloaded, so have to be watched directly on the computer. The campaign enjoyed much success last year, and during these holidays, 13 new movies have been added to the 30 existing titles. Among the new movies are: “80 egunean,” “Arriya,” Izarren Argia,” Olentzero eta subilaren lapurreta,” and “Amerikanuak,” the documentary filmed in Elko, Nevada.

2011 is almost behind us and with it good times and the not so good times. Now, the New Year presents itself like a clean slate that we’ll fill with our everyday experiences. It is that possibility, to remember and also project what the future holds that is celebrated every December 31st at midnight. The Basque clubs unite in this toast – a few days before in most cases – for what was, and what will be. It suffices to say that the Basque culture is what stands out at every celebration. That was seen at the end of year celebration at the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea in Buenos Aires, Zazpirak Bat in Rosario, Izatez Harro in Mar Chiquita, Euskaldunak Denak Bat in Arrecifes and Euskal Sustraiak in Trenque Lauquen. After a little more than five years without a euskal etxea, Brussels has returned to the list of European cities that have a Basque center, after the Bruselako Euskal Etxea was recognized yesterday by the Governing Council of Eusko Jaurlaritza as a new entity of meeting and activities for the Basques in the community. The former center was decommissioned in 2004. The new organization, now officially recognized, took its first steps at the end of last year. Zorionak eta ongi etorri!

The Olentzero treated the Basques in Pau well, during the first year that he was invited to the Lagunt eta Maita clubhouse. The members of the Bearn Basque club are very satisfied with the closing year, in which their dream became reality, its own clubhouse. The official inauguration took place on November 26th with more than 250 guests, and the happiness lived on that day will last for some time to come. In addition, during the last few months, the club has started a new Basque class for which it was able to hire four professors. But without a doubt, the most exciting, was the arrival of the Olentzero on December 17th for the first time at the new headquarters. The children had a great time with the mythical coal maker who passed out gifts to them along with much excitement.
