Saxophonist Josetxo Silguero teaches an International Course at the National Conservatory in Lima Peru

Saxophonist Josetxo Silguero Basque saxophonist Josetxo Silguero is currently in Peru to teach an international saxophone course at the National Conservatory in the capital city of Lima. The course began on January 29th and will conclude on February 7th. Silguero is one of the invited professors along with Emiliano Barri, saxophonist from Argentina. On January 29th, Silguero gave an inaugural concert playing songs by Gabriel Erkoreka and Mikel Laboa, among others. Silguero also visited Peru in August as a visiting professor in the first edition of the course.

Quebec’s Euskaldunak Basque club will star in a program on Canada’s most popular radio station

Quebec's Euskaldunak's Carnival event poster Quebec’s Basque association, Euskaldunak, has begun the year strong and this weekend will receive boost in its efforts to disseminate the Basque culture in Canada. On Sunday the club will be the focus of “Babylone Café,” a program on Canadian radio, the station with the most listeners in North America. Club president, Adelaide Daraspe, will be interviewed and will show what it is like in one of her Basque classes. After the live broadcast the hour-long program will also be made available on the internet. In addition, the association has prepared a series of activities looking towards Carnival, with a workshop on traditional Basque costumes and a talk on “Inauteriak” in the Basque Country.

This weekend Basques from Boise and Madrid will carry on the tradition of singing to Santa Agueda

Madrid's Euskal Etxea's choir singing to Santa Agueda at the Puerta del Sol (photo Madrid EE) On February 4th the feast of Santa Agueda will be celebrated in hundreds of villages and neighborhoods in the Basque Country with the singing of typical songs by choirs, associations and simply by groups of neighbors who gather to carry on the tradition. This will also be the case in some parts of the Diaspora. In the US, for example, the kids at Boise’s ikastola will sing this Friday, and next Monday Basque students in the community will take over. In Madrid, the Euskal Etxea’s choir will go out, as every year to sing in the heart of the city, stopping at such landmarks as the Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Mayor.

Boise State University has organized a trip to the Basque Country for the month of June

Boise State University Campus A unique opportunity for Basques and their friends to visit the Basque Country has presented itself thanks to Dave Lachiondo, director of the Basque Studies Program at Boise State University. The trip will take place from June 24th through July 9th, and will include places like Bilbao, the Bizkaian coast, Donostia, Azpeitia and Iparralde. The price of the trip includes airfare from Boise, 14 nights in a hotel, bus excursions and museum admission. Anyone wishing to participate should enroll and pay a deposit, prior to February 10th.

Do you want to be part of the production of a film in English, Basque, French and Spanish? Join “Ainara”

Basque actress Oihana Maritorena as Ainara The director and screenwriter Jean Darrigol and a group of film professionals have begun pre-production of “Ainara,” a multilingual film that chronicles the return of a young woman raised in the Basque Diaspora in the US, to her native Iparralde. So far the film has cast Oihana Maritorena as Ainara; the Basque-American Tomas Arana as Aitor, and Nicolas Cazale from France as Ugo. The film teams would like to include the Basque community in the Basque Country as well as the Diaspora in the filming, and are proposing at least seven ways to get involved. Details to follow.

32 Latin-American teachers participated in Euskara Munduan’s Barnetegi in Tandil, Argentina

Barnetegi participants along with their teachers (Photo EuskalKultura.com) From January 21 through the 28th teachers in Latin-American Basque clubs are participating in an intensive class in Tandil, Argentina, organized by the 'Euskara Munduan' program. They came from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil to take advantage of the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Basque and also have a chance to practice it. A group of teachers comprised of Kinku Zinkunegi (HABE), and the Argentineans Sabrina Otegui, Gabriel Arce, Gabriela Mendia, and Dani Oiharbide, of the Maizpide Barnetegi directed the workshop.

The Etxepare Basque Institute will be at Midem in Cannes and at the Expolangues Fair in Paris

Etxepare Basque Institute Logo The Etxepare Basque Institute will be in Midem in Cannes, France this Saturday, releasing Basque music and artists in collaboration with the Euskadiko Soinuak broadcasting program. Afterwards, from February 1-4, Etxepare will be at the Expolangues Fair in Paris, where they will have their own stand promoting various activities such as Basque classes, talks and a concert by Xiberoan singer, Maddi Oihenart, among others. In addition Mari Jose Olaziregi, the institute’s director of promotion of the Basque language, will meet with representatives of the University of Sorbonne III, in order to talk about the status of the Basque language and culture assistantship in the French capital.

Everything is ready to celebrate the Danborrada and San Sebastian Day in Necochea this weekend

2011 Tamborrada participants on the Basque clubhouse (photo NecocheaEE) In the Basque Country the drums have gone silent, but in Argentina there are many Basques getting ready to celebrate San Sebastian Day this Friday and Saturday, hosted by Necochea’s Basque club. The Tamborrada (or Danborrada) celebration at this Basque club is one of the largest outside of the Basque Country which attracts friends from other Basque centers, every year, who are invited to play with the local tamborreros. This year’s celebration was pushed back a week due to the Festival of Communities in which the club participated.

Once again, veteran Alfredo Jover lead the Tamborrada at Mexico City's Basque club (photo MexikoEE) Once again, Mexico City’s Basque club celebrated San Sebastian Day in style, one of the events that gathers the most people at this embassy of the Basque Country in the land of the Aztecs. The event was celebrated in the purest Donostia, or Azpeitia style that included the tamborrada. Under the direction of Alfredo Jover, event veteran, a group of chefs performed for more than an hour, entertaining with the San Sebastian March as well as other mythical compositions by Master Sarriegi.

A $150,000 donation saves California’s Los Encinos Park that houses a historic Basque ranch

A historic photo of the Amestoy family at the Los Encinos ranch (photo Los Encinos State Park) An anonymous donation will keep the Los Encinos Park open for another year, a property that includes one of the first Basque ranches in California. The park was going to be closed due to state-wide budget cuts, but thanks to the contribution of an area resident, in the San Fernando Valley, it has been saved for the time being. The ranch was built by the Garnier brothers, of French descent but who were very close to the Basque community and then it was passed on to Gaston Oxarart, originally of Aldude, and finally to Domingo Amestoy, also a Basque as explained by Euskal Kazeta.
