A full house at Ruper Ordorika’s concert and praise for “Mugaritz BSO” at Berlinale

Ruper Ordorika's concert in Berlin (photo BerlinEE) The Basque culture has been featured in Berlin these days, on the one hand, with a concert by Ruper Ordorika and on the other by celebrating Euskadi Day as part of Berlinale. On Saturday, a large audience was attracted by the music of Ordorika to the MedienGalerie, as part of the event organized by the local Basque club and the Etxepare Basque Institute. Many also attended, and applauded the movie “Mugaritz BSO” that was shown on Monday at Berlin’s Film Festival.

California State University Bakersfield to offer Basque classes with the support from the local Basque club

Unai Nafarrate, Basque teacher at CSUB as well as for the Kern County Basque club The Basque community in Bakersfield, one of the largest in California, has made one of its dreams come true: a Basque language class on the local campus of California State University (CSUB). The course is called “Basque Language and Culture” and will be taught by Unai Nafarrate originally from Arrasate. The project has materialized thanks to the support of the local Basque club, Kern County Basque club, who is taking care of the teacher’s salary. Nafarrate, will also teach Basque classes at the club. Steven Gamboa, Professor at CSUB, has told EuskalKultura.com that there are already 24 students enrolled in the University class.

The documentary Basque Hotel, a road movie through Basque North America, can be seen for free on EITB

Basque Hotel poster After its debut, last Wednesday on ETB1, the documentary Basque Hotel, directed by Josu Venero, can now be seen for free on EITB’s website. The movie is a sort of “road movie,” that travels the US from coast to coast, exploring Basque communities across the country. The texts of prominent Basque writers, who have had significant contact with this community, are part of this journey and its landscapes: Robert Laxalt, Bernardo Atxaga, Asun Garikano, Joseba Zulaika, Kirmen Uribe, William A. Douglass, Iñaki Uriarte and David Rio accompany the viewer through their writings.

A symposium on “The Basque Culture and Political Conflict” begins today at the University of Konstanz, Germany

Univeristy of Konstanz's campus A conference on Basque culture and political conflict will take place today and tomorrow at the University of Konstanz, Germany, gathering several international experts. The event, sponsored by the Etxepare Basque Institute, is the first event promoted by the Basque Language and Culture lectureship at said university. The organizers of the conference are Mari Jose Olaziregi, Director of the Promotion of Euskera at the Etxepare Institute, and local professors Pere Joan Tour and Georg A. Kaiser. Participants will include: historians, linguists, and Basque writers such as Arantxa Urretabizkaia, Harkaitz Cano and Iban Zaldua.

The new edition of the literary scholarship Nekatonea has begun; application deadline is March 15

The Nekatonea House Iparralde’s Basque Culture Institute (EKE), the Basque Writers Association and the Euskal Itsasbazterreko (IAEZI) have opened the call for applications for a literary sojourn, a scholarship that allows the winning Basque writer a month-long stay at the Nekatonea house in Hendaia, where he/she can dedicate himself/herself to writing at his/her leisure. The scholarship also includes a stipend of 1,000 Euros. The stay would take place during the month of October and the application deadline will end on March 15th. Last year’s winner was Fernando Morillo.

Eresbil, the Basque Music Archive's website Eresbil, the Basque National Music Archive, continues to increase their holdings year after year, currently offering access to around 210,000 musical documents including sheet music, recordings, books, and studies. Eresbil makes all of this available through its website to musicians, singers, music fans, and researchers who request it. There are many choirs and music groups from the Diaspora who have already taken advantage of this service, especially from the US, where the majority of requests have come from.

Just like we previously reported, that is what they did in Gooding and in Boise. The Nevada Historical Society presents an exhibition of tree carvings left by Basque sheepherders in the West

An example of a carving left by a herder and a copy made by the Earls (photo UNR) The Nevada Historical Society’s exhibit, “Basque Aspen Tree Art,” that includes tree carvings made by Basque sheepherders will run until April 7, 2012. The exhibit is based on carvings and rubbings done by Phillip and Jean Earl authors of Basque Aspen Art of the Sierra Nevada. The exhibit will also include talks by faculty members of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno.
