Julian Celaya, director of Basque Collectivities Abroad, is in Argentina on an official visit until Monday. The main purpose of his visit is to participate in the 90th anniversary celebration of the Basque club, Euskaldunak Denak Bat, in Arrecifes which he will attend with the delegate of Euskadi to the Mercosur, Elvira Cortajarena. In addition, among other activities, Celaya and Cortajarena will meet with Spanish Embassy’s minister of Employment and Security, in charge of communities and social affairs, as relayed to EuskalKultura.com by Delegation sources.

Costumes and the typical traditions of Carnival in the Basque Country have reached Quebec this year thanks to Euskaldunak. On February 11th the Basque club, headquartered in Montreal, organized a festival with participants creating their costumes and hats typical of carnival in some parts of the Basque Country. After, Adelaide Daraspe, club president, gave a talk which delved in to the rich tradition of Carnival in Basque culture.

The Basque Studies Program at Boise State University celebrated the International Mother Language Day yesterday by showing Zuretzako, the first American film made in Basque. The film, directed by Boise native Javi Zubizarreta, recreates the relationship between an immigrant Basque sheepherder to Idaho and his son, when he comes to the US to help him with his work. Joseba Gabilondo, film expert and professor at Michigan State University also attended the screening along with the films director. The activities will conclude tomorrow with a talk on Catalina de Erauso at the Basque Museum.

Boise’s Basque Museum and Cultural Center presented its campaign “Expanding Horizons” at the Capitol building yesterday, in hopes of raising a million and a half dollars in donations and sponsorship in order to meet its ambitious expansion. Before publicly launching the campaign, the Center had already received several personal donations totaling $775,000. Guillermo Echenique, Secretary General of Foreign Action of the Basque Government, participated yesterday in the official presentation of the campaign in Boise showing Basque Government support and highlighting the Center’s work for the dissemination of Basque culture through its collections, exhibitions and educational programs.

Guillermo Echenique, Secretary General of Foreign Action of the Basque Government, and the Lieutenant Governor of Idaho, Brad Little, signed an agreement of collaboration yesterday between Euskadi and the state of Idaho, home to a large Basque community. The agreement provides for the creation of a working group between companies from both nations and aims to support their growth and explore common interests in the fields of renewable energy, agriculture and new technologies among others. It also provides for the opening of a Euskadi business office in Boise as well as a similar facility for Idaho in Bilbao.

Maider Lopez (Donostia, 1975) is one of the Basque artists with the most international exposure in her relatively short career, having exhibited in various parts of the world, such as Shanghai, New York, Rome and Rotterdam, as well as in the Basque Country itself. Her latest exhibit can be seen in New York, where she is showing pictures and videos of her latest work in Rotterdam: a soccer championship played between irrigation canals.

Bertsos will resound at the prestigious US university of Stanford thanks to Amets Arzalluz from Hendaia and Julio Soto from Navarre. Both were invited by the Basque language program at the university that organized an evening dedicated to bertsolarismo. The event will begin with the screening of the trailer of the documentary entitled, Bertsolari directed by Asier Altuna, followed by a roundtable discussion on this Basque oral tradition. The activities will conclude with a demonstration by Arzallus and Soto. Iñaki Lopez de Luzuriaga, Basque teacher at Stanford and event organizer will also participate with the support of the Etxepare Basque Institute.

April 26th will mark the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Gernika and the Euskal PEN Klub association is inviting writers from all over the world to submit their poems in remembrance of that tragedy. Poems may be sent in their original languages, and if that is not Basque, then a translation to Basque, Spanish, English, French or German should also be submitted. Submissions will then be read during the commemorative events surrounding the massacre, and will also be published. The submission deadline is March 31, 2012.

The Etxepare Basque Institute and the University of Konstanz, in Germany, were both very satisfied by the results of the “Basque culture and political conflict” symposium which took place this week. The conference provided a forum for reflection on the Basque conflict, on the basis of fields such as literature, linguistics and history. The Basque Government’s Minister of Culture Blanca Urgell and the director of the Etxepare Basque Institute, Aizpea Goenaga, attended the meeting on Tuesday, having both participated in “Basque Day” the day before as part of Berlinale.
