As every year, children of NABO club members have the opportunity to participate in a new Udaleku, a summer camp organized by NABO, the North American federation of Basque clubs. This year Udaleku will take place in Boise, Idaho from July 17-25, with the closing of camp coinciding with Boise’s Basque festival celebration, San Ignacio. During the two week camp children will be introduced to dance, music, Euskera, games, and Basque sports. Anyone wishing to participate should apply as soon as possible as enrollment fills quickly.

The Australian Basque club, Gure Txoko, had its 45th birthday on February 11th and so club members celebrated the anniversary with a boat trip through Sydney’s Bay. The event gathered more than 40 members who enjoyed a beautiful day and a decadent menu that included prawns and oysters. The organization reelected Ruben Alvaro as its president at the beginning of the year and has also resumed its Basque classes again after Christmas break, thanks to teacher Ugutz Tornes. Among the events planned for the upcoming months is the Aberri Eguna celebration that is annually carried out outdoors at Centennial Park.

The Basque language will be honored in Madrid from March 13th-15th during the “Euskarari gorazarre/Basque, as language with a future,” conference organized by the Etxepare Basque Institute, Euskaltzaindia – Basque Language Academy and the Royal Basque Society of Friends of the Country (RSBAP). The goal of the conference is to publicize the progress made in recent years in Basque cultural activity, as well as the level of language in linguistic as well as literary creation. Among the programmed events will be a tribute to Euskalzain Henrike Knorr, a musical poetic recital “Katuak eta paradisua” (Cats and Paradise), by Bernardo Atxaga and Jabier Muguruza, and the presentation of the updated version of the show “AT!”

The ninth edition of Laburbira, the traveling Basque audiovisual tour will begin on March 1st in Ermua. The festival, organized by Topagunea, the federation of Basque associations, will show eight works this year including shorts, video clips, animation…Seven of these films are in Basque and one is in Galician (with subtitles), this year’s invited language. Twenty six showings will take place in the Basque Country with three more in the Diaspora thanks to Basque clubs in Madrid, London and Paris.

The University of California in Santa Barbara celebrated International Mother Language Day on February 23rd and 24th with a conference day featuring the Basque language. In its current phase, this California University has offered Basque language and culture courses since January of 2010, and thanks to this program, as well as to support from the Etxepare Basque Institute, various experts took part in the seminar giving lectures devoted to the Basque language.

The Basque Government has already provided an automatic system to translate from Spanish to Basque that can be used, free of charge, from anywhere in the world. The translator allows translation from text, websites, as well as simple documents. The system that has been in place since 2008 was presented yesterday in Bilbao by Lehendakari Patxi Lopez. Now, the focus is on developing translation tools for Basque to Spanish and English to Basque translations which should be available by mid 2013.

Barcelona’s Euskal Etxea once again will showcase Basque cinema in the Catalan capital with the Zinemaldia 2012 festival. This exhibition will present some of the most recent work in Basque film, beginning tomorrow and running until the end of the month. Documentaries, animation, drama, comedy…the program will cover all kinds and genres of fil m that will be screened in their original versions with subtitles. The films’ directors and actors will present the movies in person and will visit with the public at the Euskal Etxea. On March 8th Fermin Muguruza will present his documentary Next Music Station: Lebanon.

San Francisco’s Basque Cultural Center celebrated its 30th anniversary on the weekend of February 17th along with a broad representation of the US Basque community. NABO’s first meeting of the year also took place on the same weekend, as well as a workshop for Basque teachers in US and Canadian clubs. NABO renewed its commitment to the Basque language and its intention to promote it through offering courses at various Basque clubs. According to HABE, over the last three years the number of Basque students in both countries has doubled.

Topics proposed by Basque students at Stanford served to inspire the bertsolaris Amets Arzallus, Julio Soto and Johnny Curutchet, in the first bertso presentation that the prestigious university has seen. The event took place on February 21st as part of an entire day dedicated to bertsolarism organized by Iñaki Lopez de Luzuriaga, Basque language and culture professor at the university. It was a special day, not only because students were able to hear young bertsolaris from the Basque Country facing off with veteran Basque-American bertsolari Johnny Curutchet, but also because they could enjoy the interesting discussion that took place following where all three dissected their verses and various aspects of the ancient, yet modern oral tradition.

The board of directors of Mexico City’s Basque club, with president Lourdes Arrechea at the head, has been challenged to boost its courses of Euskera, and is working hard to achieve their goal. The center offers three levels of Basque, taught by Gurutzne Etxeberria, Nerea Basterretxea and Gabriel Ceballos. This year the computer room, where classes are given, has been remodeled, as well as preparing a special room for the students. The results are already being noted with an increase in student numbers. Registration is still open for anyone who would like to take advantage of this initiative.
