Iban Zaldua and Mari Jose Olaziregi to participate in a linguistic conference at the University of Bologna, Italy

Basque writer Iban Zaldua The University of Bologna, Italy, will host a conference entitled, “The Plural Spain” today and tomorrow. The conference was organized by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University, with the goal of reflecting “on the linguistic, artistic, and historic characteristics that characterize the diversity that, stemming from a rich multilingualism, defines the cultural field of contemporary Spain.” Basque representatives will include Basque writer Iban Zaldua accompanied by the director of the Promotion of the Basque Language at the Etxepare Basque Institute, Mari Jose Olaziregi.

Boise State University offers two PhD Scholarships in Engineering for Basque Students

Boise State University Campus Boise State University’s (BSU) Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department is proud to announce that it has partnered with the BSU Basque Studies Program and the Boise Basque Museum & Cultural Center to offer two scholarships to qualified applicants to pursue the PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boise State. The scholarship, officially known as an assistantship, will provide monetary compensation in the range $18,000-$24,000 per year to allow the student to cover living expenses. It will also provide full payment of tuition costs. Applications must be submitted before April 15th.

The tribute to the Basque Language will conclude today in Madrid with a presentation of the show “At!”

The first time ever that the Basque Language was featured at the Royal Spanish Language Academy (photo Etxepare) The Basque language has experienced an unprecedented moment this week, as it was honored at the Royal Spanish Language Academy, during the conference “Basque, a Language of the Future,” organized by Euskaltzaindia, the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Basque Royal Society of Friends of the Country (RSBAP). In addition to the official ceremony, attended by representatives of Basque and Spanish institutions, there were also several cultural events such as the poetic-musical recital yesterday by writer Bernardo Atxaga and musician Rupert Ordorika at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. The conference will conclude today with the presentation of the show "At".

Basque teachers from European Basque clubs propose creating a permanent communication network

Basque teachers from Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Paris and Berlin with HABE representatives (photo HABE) The meeting of Basque teachers at European Basque clubs took place on 8th and 9th in Barcelona and was very well attended with participants leaving satisfied with the results. There were approximately 15 Basque teachers in attendance from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Paris, and Berlin along with the director of HABE Iñaki Uribe, and the coordinator of the Euskara Munduan Program, Kinku Zinkunegi. During the meeting a proposal was made to create a communication network between teachers that would allow for information and experience sharing in a more permanent manner. It was also agreed to move this annual meeting up to October, to coincide with the beginning of the course and making it more helpful to new teachers. The Euskal Etxea in Paris offered to host this event in 2013.

Zazpi etxe Frantzian by Bernardo Atxaga is among 15 vying for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize

Bernardo Atxaga presenting Zazpi etxe Frantzian in Iruña in 2009 Bernardo Atxaga’s novel, Zazpi etxe Frantzian (Seven Houses in France), is getting very good reviews in the United Kingdom where the English version was published last November. Additional good news has been received that the novel has been chosen as one of the best foreign fiction books of 2011 in the running for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, awarded by the Booktrust Association. On April 12th the five finalists will be published with the winning entry being among them.

The Basque Center of Chile begins its centennial celebration with a demonstration by chefs from Bizkaia

The Euzko Etxea of Santiago Chile will celebrate its centennial this year Chile’s Basque club will celebrate its centennial this year, and even though the main festivities haven’t begun yet, the Basque community has started to warm up. Tomorrow there will be a Basque gastronomy event at the Basque club thanks to four of the best chefs from Bizkaia, two of which have received Michelin stars. The event has been organized with the collaboration of the Provincial Government of Bizkaia, who will mark the closure of its first trade mission in this country coinciding with this event.

A workshop on rural Basque sports had audience members competing at UC Santa Barbara

Some of the workshop participants along with professor Arkaitz Moreno in green (photo courtesy of AMoreno) The University of California Santa Barbara was very satisfied with the workshop on Basque Rural Sports conducted by Professor Arkaitz Moreno on March 2nd. The workshop was made up of two parts: a lecture about rural sports on the one hand and on the other, a competition, pure and simple. The audience members went out on the patio and there they competed in some of the more typical events, appropriate for their strength. The event was very well received and will take place again next year in Santa Barbara for sure and maybe at other universities such as BSU and Bakersfield, where courses on Basque language and culture are also held.

The Nantes Film Festival honors Alex de la Iglesia and Bernardo Atxaga in “The Basque Window”

Scene from the film Bi anai by Imanol Rayo and based on the novel by Bernardo Atxaga For another year the Nantes Film Festival will dedicate a large part of its program to Basque cinema as part of the cycle “La Fenêtre Basque” or the Basque Window. The 22nd edition of the festival will begin on Thursday and will run until the 25th of March. Director Alex de la Iglesia, from Bilbao, will be featured with a cycle dedicated to his work. In addition the “Bernardo Atxaga at the Movies” section has scheduled three films based on the novels of this Basque writer: Obaba by Montxo Armendariz, Bi anai by Imanol Rayo and Zeru Horiek by Aizpea Goenaga.

Kulunka continues its international success with "André & Dorine” now Panama, next Turkey, Russia, USA...

Dorine and André are the main characters of this this work about Alzheimer’s and love, performed by three actors wearing masks that don’t speak a word. From March 22-25 the Basque theater company will be at the Fifth International Festival of Performing Arts in Panama, with its successful work “André and Dorine.” The group from Gipuzkoa has spent more than a year on an international sweep with this work about Alzheimer’s and love, performed by three actors wearing masks that don’t speak a word. “There are no words and paradoxically, that is what makes it understood everywhere, in Cuba as well as Nepal,” Garbiñe Insausti, Kulunka actress explained to EuskalKultura.com. The work has not stopped since its debut and they promise to continue. This year, after Panama, they will move on to Turkey, Russia, Finland, Norway, the US and China…and who knows where else.
