France’s Basque clubs gathered in Bordeaux invited by the local Euskaldunen Bitzarra

France's Basque clubs meet in Bordeaux (Photo Bordeaux EE) The Basque clubs of France got together on March 24, invited by Bordeaux’s Euskal Etxea. Those attending included the Basque clubs of Paris, Lagunt eta Maita from Pau, the Eskualdunak Association of Montpellier and the dance group Denak Bat from Toulouse, along with their hosts from Bordeaux. The meeting was an opportunity to strengthen ties as well as share ideas and experiences, learning from each other. On the second day attendees participated in the Odolkiaren Bazkaria hosted by the Eskualdunen Biltzarra, along with other Basque entities in the city.

Euzkadi under the Bombs," exhibit at the Eusko Etxea in Caracas (photo CaracasEE) Several members of the Basque community in Caracas attended the opening of the photo exhibit “1937, Euzkadi under the Bombs” on March 31. This exhibit recalls the bombing of Gernika and Durango this year which marks the 75 anniversary of both tragedies. Its opening coincided exactly with the date that the first bombing took place in Durango on March 31, 1937. Several Basque clubs will commemorate the anniversary of the bombing of Gernika on April 26.

The Center for Basque Studies at UNR announces a scholarship for Basque Americans; deadline April 15

Kate Camino at the entrance of the Center for Basque Studies (photo EuskalKultura.com) The Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno has opened the application period for the Dolores Saval Trigero Scholarship for 2012. This scholarship is designated for students of Basque origin, preferably for those residing in rural areas, to help with the costs of attending UNR. The award is between $500 and $1,000 with half being awarded each semester. The scholarship was created in 1995 in memory of Dolores Saval Trigero, daughter of Basque immigrants. Application deadline is April 15. Additionally, the Center will host this year’s international conference: “Play, Games and Sports: Bodies of Practice, Communities of Desire,” April 19-21, 2012.

The Etxepare Basque Institute has opened the call for grants for the dissemination of Basque culture abroad

Etxepare Basque Institute's Logo. The Etxepare Basque Institute published in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country grants available for 2012 for the diffusion of the Basque culture abroad. Grants are divided into two categories: first, the dissemination of visual arts and plastics, music, performing arts and literary works during the 2012 year, outside the Basque Country (with a budget of 370,000 Euros); and the second, for participation in fairs and professional festivals held in 2012 also outside the Basque Country (149,000 Euros).

Delegate Iñaki Martinez and the Director of Basque Citizens and Communities Abroad, Julián Celaya, with one of the honorees (photo Irekia) Julián Celaya, Director for Basque Citizens and Communities Abroad, visited Bogota’s Basque club as well as the Euskal Etxea Luis Miguel de Zulategui in Medellin, accompanied by Iñaki Martinez, Euskadi’s delegate in Colombia and Venezuela. In Medellin, Celaya paid tribute to the older members of the local Basque community in an emotional encounter.

General Strike in the Basque Country

Every labor union in the southern Basque Country has called for a general strike today, March 29, in response to the cuts in rights and labor reform that the Spanish Government, lead by Mariano Rajoy, has adopted. After Antton’s concert on Saturday, London fans eagerly await Berri Txarrak’s visit in April

Last Saturday's concert at the Oxford House organized by London's Euskal Elkartea (photo EuskalKultura.com) The group Antton performed its first album “Gorantz erori” (Fall up) last Saturday at the Oxford House, in Bethnal Green, thanks to the London Basque Society-Euskal Elkartea. Since then, Basque music fans have been anxiously awaiting Berri Txarrak’s visit in April, who, after selling out their first concert, have decided to schedule a second performance, both in London theaters.

Poster announcing the commemorative events of the 75th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika The 26 of April marks the 75 anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika at the hands of Germany’s Condor Legion, allies with Franco’s forces. Berlin’s Basque club, an association dedicated to recall the tragedy and support brotherhood between both cities, has organized a complete series of activities to commemorate the anniversary. The events will begin on Sunday and will run through the April 26, with lectures, film, around a central exhibit.

The Pelota Federation of the Province of Buenos Aires now includes a Member from La Plata’s Euzko Etxea

Pilotaris playing at La Plata's Trinquet (photo EE) The new Board of Directors of the Pelota Federation of Buenos Aires (FPPBA) was elected at its annual meeting on March 17 to serve during the 2012-2014 term. The group is comprised of representatives from different institutions in the province, including the current president of the Euzko Etxea of La Plata, Javier Clúa. “The challenge for the FPPBA this year will be to consolidate Paleta events, while continuing to support more non-traditional forms such as hand ball, Xare and Paleta cuero ,” as expressed by the heads of the federation.

The Etxepare Basque Institute will inaugurate the Koldo Mitxelena Chair at the University of Chicago on April 11

Aizpea Goenaga, Etxepare Basque Institute Director and Mari Jose Olaziregi, Director of the Promotion of Euskera (photo Etxepare) Aizpea Goenaga, director of the Etxepare Basque Institute, announced yesterday in Donostia, that the entity for the promotion of Basque culture abroad will launch two more chairs at universities in the US and Germany this year. The first, the Koldo Mitxelena Chair, will be inaugurated on April 11 at the University of Chicago, and this fall the Eduardo Chillida Chair will open at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. They have also identified the new visiting professor for the Bernardo Atxaga Chair at the City University of New York (CUNY), as Josean Fernandez, director of the Basque Film Library.
