Looking for 30 walk-ons between the ages of 18 and 78 to participate in the filming of the movie Ainara

Actress Oihana Maritorena will play the lead role in Ainara The production of Ainara continues, slowly but surely, a movie in Basque, English, French and Spanish that is supported by a group of professional Basques in the Basque Country and the Diaspora. The movie is advancing thanks to “auzolan” (collective work effort) and the same spirit that has opened collaborators up to the possibility to participate as extras. Filming is scheduled for 2013, but the pre-selection process has already begun. They are now seeing 30 men and women between the ages of 18 and 78. Candidates may send their pictures and application to the Ainara Facebook page.

The campaign continues to save the Beti-Jai Fronton in Madrid which is in danger of imminent ruin

Current state of neglect of the Beti-Jai Fronton, situated in the middle of Madrid (photo Save Beti Jai) The group “Save the Beti-Jai Fronton” in Madrid continues its efforts relentlessly to protect the historic building, catalogued as of Cultural Interest. Madrid’s City Hall announced at the end of March its intention to expropriate the property, in order to restore and maintain its one of a kind architectural and cultural characteristic. While its supporters were happy with the news, they were still concerned with the lack of a concrete project for its conservation as well as for the state it currently finds itself in.

Rhode Island’s Euskal Etxea plans an extensive program of activities for 2012: this Sunday, Aberri Eguna

To begin, this Sunday the young club will celebrate Aberri Eguna, in which, besides enjoying the get together, they will talk about plans to rent their own locale. The club has reminded its members of the calendar of events for 2012 and projects that are underway such as the “Senior Project Scholarship,” that will provide financial help to students who choose Basque topics for their final projects.

The Koldo Mitxelena chair has been inaugurated at the University of Chicago

Nevertheless, he is now established, on his own merits, in this prestigious university,” said the Basque Government’s Minister of Culture Blanca Urgell at the University of Chicago during the inauguration of the chair that is named in honor of the great Basque linguist. Supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute, the aim of the chair is to promote Basque studies in US universities. The inauguration events will conclude this weekend, with a spot dedicated to Basque cinema in Chicago’s Latin Film Festival.

For the first time HABE will provide accreditation exams in levels 1, 2 and 3 of Euskera in Buenos Aires

Basque students at a barnetegi held in January in Tandil (photo EuskalKultura.com) This year Basque students in South American clubs will be able to take exams for levels 1, 2 and 3 of Euskera, thanks to a new call by HABE. So, those professors who have trained in the Euskera Munduan program 2007/2011 will be able to be accredited. “In Buenos Aires, we hope that more than 30 people will test,” Kinku Zinkunegi, program coordinator explained to EuskalKultura.com. Additionally, there will be other annual testing opportunities in Madrid and Barcelona. In all three cases, the deadline to register for the test is from Wednesday to Friday of next week.

Starting tomorrow Basque language lecturers will liven up the Polish Spring with film, poetry and music

The "Basque Spring" has precedents such as the "Basque Week" that was organized by the Basque language and culture lecturers last year at the University of Poznan (photo ADones) Starting tomorrow, the Polish cities of Warsaw, Poznan and Gniezno will enjoy a “Basque Spring” thanks to a series of activities organized by the Basque language and culture lecturers of the Etxepare Basque institute in this country. According to the Institute, the events will run through the 20 of April, with a program that includes film, poetry, and music. On the one hand, the cultural proposal offers a selection of short films distributed by Kimuak, and on the other, a poetic-musical recital presented by writers Harkaitz Cano and Rikardo Arregi, along with musicians Jabier Muguruza and Mikel Azpiroz.

The 75th anniversary of the bombing Gernika arouses interest in Berlin: this week, film and conferences

Some members of Berlin's Basque club board of directors along with historians, and filmmakers (photo Helena Falabino) Berlin’s Basque club is carrying out a complete program of activities to commemorate the 75 anniversary of the bombing of Gernika by Nazi planes in 1937. Even though the anniversary is on the 26 of this month, the Basque club has been hosting various commemorative events since April 1, with the inauguration of an exhibit. During the presentation one could see two documentaries on this tragedy, 'Gernika' by Klaus Ihlau and 'Die sichtbare Stimme' (Visible Vote) by Pia Kuhlmann and Pedro Deltell. This week, the Basque club offers a conference and two more documentaries.

Starting tomorrow the 2012 Literaldia festival will bring the latest in Basque literature to Barcelona

Literaldia 2012 poster The Barcelona Basque club will begin the Literaldia 2012 festival tomorrow. The event will run through May 12 and will offer Catalonia a current perspective on the Basque Country, through its literature. This year’s edition will include book presentations, lectures, roundtables, music recitals and bertsolaris, but new this year will be the micro and macro stories to be created on Twitter, in Basque and Catalan. Among those attending will be Basque writers Mariasun Landa, Miren Agur Meabe, Arantxa Urretabizkaia, Edorta Jimenez, and Hasier Etxeberria.

New York’s Eusko Etxea celebrated Aberri Eguna, the last one before the Centennial of the center

Many say, in fact, that it is celebrated more than in the country itself, maybe out of nostalgia and the homesickness that comes from being away. We’ll begin the chronicle of Aberri Eguna 2012, in New York, with more to come as information is sent to us from various centers and Basque communities. In New York’s case, this celebration coincides with the preparations of the Euskal Etxea’s Centennial, whose Aberri Eguna celebration in 2013 is announced to be particularly relevant.

Basque clubs all over the world will celebrate Aberri Eguna this weekend and throughout the month

Aberri Eguna celebration at New York's Basque club in 2011 (photo EENY) From Sunday until the end of the month, Basque clubs around the world will join in on the Aberri Eguna, or the Day of the Basque Homeland, celebrations. This is one of the most celebrated events in the Basque community in the Diaspora from Quebec to Buenos Aires, and from Sydney to London; Basques from very different countries will unite to celebrate the link that unites them all: the land of their elders. Even though the official holiday is Sunday, in many Basque centers the festivities are delayed a week or more, aiming to gather the largest number of participants possible.
