On April 26, 1937 Nazi aviators attacked the Bizkaian village of Gernika, razing most of the city with their bombs and causing 126 fatalities. The massacre became a universal symbol of horror and denunciation of the war – in large part thanks to the master work “Guernica” by Picasso. In this spirit the event is remembered in many places around the world, especially in the Basque Diaspora for whom this date has always been charged with emotion and symbolism. We’ll start our journey through these various activities with the inauguration of the exhibit entitled “The Bombing of Gernika 75 Anniversary” in Mexico City that is being attended by the director of Relations with Basque Collectivities Abroad, Julian Celaya.

The Boise Basque community will get together this Saturday for its second Annual Korrika Fun Run, a fundraising event to help Euskera students attend intensive courses in the Basque Country. The event also aims to raise awareness for the Basque language. Runners will meet at the Basque Club and run to the Julia Davis Park and back. Those who cannot run are encouraged to join in the celebrations, either by volunteering at the registration desk or by making donations. This Fun Run is inspired in Korrika, a two-week-long popular relay run that is organized in the Basque Country every two years by AEK.

The Basque workshops organized each spring by the Basque language lecturer at Adam Mickiewicz in Poznan have already become a classic in the academic life of this Polish city. This year the workshops entitled, “Basque Days,” had an increased number of people participating from Euskal Herria like writers Harkaitz Cano and Rikardo Arregi and musicians Jabier Muguruza and Mikel Azpiroz. Additionally, as in other years, it is worth noting the student involvement as they presented a theatrical adaptation of the play Hitzen ondoeza (The Uneasiness of Words) by Joseba Sarrionandia. Berlin’s Euskal Etxea continues with the events surrounding the 75 anniversary of the bombing of Gernika, and after a month of intense activity, will conclude this Thursday with a commemorative program on the 26 on exactly the same day and hour that Nazi aviators swept the Bizkaian village. The tribute will take place in the Guernica Plaza in the German capital, at the same time as the attack occurred. The Basque club has succeeded in involving several Berlin groups and nearby churches that will all ring their bells at the same time in memory of the victims.

During this time of crisis, publishing news like this makes our day. On the one hand, Bizkaia:xede has announced this week that it has started a program of financial aid to attract highly qualified workers. This first call includes a budget of 700,000 Euros to finance between 50% and 100% of the cost of recruitment, promotion and linking of researchers. The program is co-financed by the European Union. Additionally, the Ikerbasque Foundation has already received 300 applications for its new program to aid young researchers, through which 20 doctors between the ages of 28 and 36 years old will be recruited to work in the Basque country.

The Center for Basque Studies 11th annual conference entitled, “Play, Games and Sport: Bodies of Practice, Communities of Desire” begins today, bringing experts and university professors together for three days to analyze games and sports. Conference organizers are Joseba Etxebeste and Clara Urdangarin from the University of the Basque Country who are in Reno this year as the William Douglass Distinguished Scholars for 2011-12, along with Mariann Vaczi (ABD) Ph.D. candidate and Joseba Zulaika, Vaczi’s thesis director and co-director of the Center for Basque Studies.

Bernardo Atxaga’s novel Seven houses in France, has been selected as one of the five finalists in the “Shadow” Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, the parallel section of this major British Literary Award. The “Shadow” is awarded by a jury formed by a collection of blogs specializing in foreign fiction. Along with Atxaga are authors like Amos Oz, Sjon, Peter Nadas, Umberto Eco and Matthias Politycki. The jury will announce the winning work on May 14, just prior to the official announcement of the winner of the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize.

The Basque Government’s Department of Culture presented Dokuklik yesterday, a database of historical documents that includes both public and private archives from the Basque Country. The website contains six million references from the 13th to the 20th centuries and two and a half million associated digital images, which will reach three million in June. Additionally, a music archive is underway and audiovisual resources are under design according to the Vice-minister of Culture Antonio Rivera during the presentation.

They have not admitted it themselves, but the news that Kalakan will be part of Madonna’s upcoming tour has circulated on the internet and in the Basque press for a few days. The news was let out on one of the singer’s fan sites, and since then various Basque media, including EuskalKultura.com, have tried to confirm the news without success. Apparently the group has signed a confidentially agreement with the singer and neither they nor their label, nor their entourage can provide any information on the subject. It will have to wait until May 29 when Madonna begins her world tour in Tel Aviv. Will Kalakan be with her?

The Etxepare Basque Institute has published two new grants: one, destined for activities that will disseminate the Basque culture outside the Basque Country; and the other for the translation of works done by Basque writers into languages other than Basque. The deadline to apply for the first one is two months from today. The second has two separate application periods: from today until May 16 or between the 1 and 31 of October.
