Once again the Euskal Etxea of Mexico celebrated Baztango Eguna with great atmosphere and attendance

The fronton at Mexico's Euskal Etxea filled with friends to celebrate a new edition of Baztango Eguna (photo MCArrechea) Baztango Eguna (Baztan Day) is celebrated in Mexico with great enthusiasm, thanks to the large community of natives of this valley in Mexico City. On May 1 the Euskal Etxea of Mexico was the scene of a new edition of the festivities that was attended by more than 130 people. As each year, the event is organized by a group of people from Baztan aided by other club members. The menu included traditional dishes from the region such as Baztan-zopa. Lourdes Arrechea, club president, who is also from Baztan shared with the readers of EuskalKultura.com a chronicle of the day’s events.

Basques in Boise support the Basque language by running Korrika 2012 as well as with a “Kantu-Poteo”

Ready to start the Korrika Fun Run 2012 in front of the Basque Center (photo IKortazar) The Boise Basque community is really supporting Basque and in the last few months has held various activities to promote the practice and visibility of the Basque language in this US city. Many of these are original and entertaining, like the second edition of the Korrika Fun Run, that took place on April 28. A group of euskaltzales got together at the Basque club and ran a few kilometers through the streets of Boise hoping to give the Basque language some visibility. On May 4 another group of Boise Basques practiced their Basque by singing while they bar hopped through the Basque Block.

“Kantu poteoa” in Boise: a group of Basque lovers will tour the Basque Block singing Basque songs

Basque students singing Santa Ageda in their way through the Basque Block (photo IKortazar) There are a thousand different ways to learn and practice Basque and this one, proposed by a group of Euskaltzales in Boise, is definitely entertaining. Today they will get together for a “kantu-poteoa,” (Bar hopping/singing) touring the bars and Basque haunts on Boise’s Basque block all the while singing songs in Basque. Knowing the songs is not even a prerequisite to participate since all of the lyrics are printed and passed out ahead of time. You don’t even have to be a good singer according to Izaskun Kortazar, NABO’s Euskara coordinator; the only requirement is to be open to the Basque language and want to have fun. The learning is a bonus!

Fresno Basque club kicks-off tomorrow 2012’s US Basque festival season: see calendar

Last year's NABO Convention held in Buffalo, Wyoming (photo EuskalKultura.com) This weekend’s Basque picnic in Fresno, California will kick-off the Basque festivals that are held every year throughout the US organized by Basque communities in a dozen states. August is the month with the most festivals, even if this year’s main event, or NABO Convention, will be held in Elko, NV July 6-8 coinciding with the 49 edition of the “National Basque Festival.” You still have time to make plans and join in!

Madrid’s Euskal Etxea held its first Basque poetry contest and will now become immersed in the Cup final

Award ceremony of the first edition of the Basque Poetry contest (photo MadrilEE) Madrid’s Basque club continues with its usual fast pace of activities and is preparing new events for the month of May. Among these is the Soccer Cup final that will be played on May 25 in Madrid between Athletic of Bilbao and Barcelona for which the club has prepared a special day. To get warmed up, a group from Bilbao will give a concert at the Euskal Etxea before the game. Afterwards, they’ll watch the game live on the gigantic screen in the Pello Aranburu room.

Second special session today at the Brussels Short Film Festival, dedicated to Basque productions

The second session of the Brussels Short Film Festival dedicated to Basque films takes place on Wednesday For the second year in a row, Basque creativity and talent was honored at the Brussels Short Film Festival, this year celebrating its XV edition and constituing one of the main events in the European audiovisual sector. The Basque participation in the event is framed within the Second European Cycle of Basque Culture and Talent that is supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute along with the Delegation of Euskadi at the European Union, the Basque Film Archive and the European Capital of Culture Donostia 2016. On Monday April 30 and on Wednesday May 2 specific sessions are devoted to Basque short films.

Thanks to an agreement with the Basque Center, the Central University will start Basque classes in May

Gure Etxea Basque club in Tandil Talks between the Basque club and the UNCPBA (National Central University of the Province of Buenos Aires) to assess the feasibility of the project began during the 2011 school year. With the goal being to reach the maximum number of people in academic fields possible, Gure Etxea provided the university with the resources to put a beginning level Basque language class in place. Now, the projected has been accepted and so classes are about to start in May, meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays and will be taught by Valeria Aramburu.

Kirmen Uribe gives a talk at Stanford University and San Francisco Basque Cultural Center remembers Gernika

Basque writer Kirmen Uribe talked about his novel Bilbao-New York-Bilbao at Stanford University Iñaki Lopez de Luzuriaga, Basque language and culture lecturer at Stanford University let us know about the some of the latest Basque cultural activities that have taken place in San Francisco. First the Basque Cultural Center remembered the Bombing of Gernika, with a commemorative event on April 20, and secondly, Kirmen Uribe, Basque writer from Ondarroa, gave a talk at Stanford University where he presented the English version of his latest work, the novel Bilbao-New York-Bilbao. Uribe also remembered the Gernika tragedy that took place in 1937 by sharing his own family’s story.

Barcelona’s Euskal Etxea co-edited in Catalan 'Orhipean', a very successful book on the Basque Country

Journalist Itziar Ziga with Xamar at the Barcelona Euskal Etxea stand signing copies of their books (photo BCNEE) With a dozen or so editions, translated into four languages, the book Orhipean, Gure Herria ezagutzen (Under the Orhi mountain, Getting to know the Basque Country) by Navarrese writer Juan Carlos Etxegoien ‘Xamar,” is one of the best-known, and most widely accepted treaties on the Basque Country. This year Barcelona’s Basque club has supported its translation into Catalan, and is co-editing it along with publisher Pamiela. The book entitled, Orhipean. El país de la llengua basca (Orhipean. The Country of the Basque Language) was presented in Barcelona on “The Day of the Book” and Xamar was present at the stand at the center of Las Ramblas autographing copies of his work.
