Euskaldunak of Quebec visited the Charlevoix Basque Farm on its 2012 trip

Club vice-president Ernest Behaxategui at the Charlevoix Basque Farmhouse (photo JLafourcade) The Euskaldunak of Quebec Association took its annual members’ trip and this year the chosen destination was the interior region of Quebec. A group of twenty people from the club attended the excursion over the weekend according to club president Adelaide Daraspe. They visited the Saint-Anne waterfall, four hours from Montreal, and then the Basque Farm Charlevoix, a farmhouse that is run by a couple from Iparralde: Isabelle and Jean-Jacques Etcheberrigaray who sell Basque products.

Bakersfield will celebrate a day of Basque Studies; on Thursday in Santa Barbara, concert by Noka

Cathy Petrissans Parker, Andrea Bidart Oteiza and Begoña Echeverria are Noka Basque Studies will be the highlight over the next few days in California universities thanks to the Basque language lecturers and classes offered at the University of California in Bakersfield and Santa Barbara. On the one hand, tomorrow literature and the Basque imaginary will be the focus of a conference organized by the University at Bakersfield. On the other, next Thursday, the Basque-American group Noka will perform a concert at the University in Santa Barbara, as part of an event on the Galician writer Paz Andrade.

Literary contests on Twitter successfully brought Literaldia 2012 to social networking

May and June's activity poster The Literaldia 2012 festival has concluded and Barcelona’s Euskal Etxea has rated it as a success. The literature festival showed the Catalan society a selection of the latest Basque cultural productions. Not only that, but this edition of Literaldia even made it to the social networks, thanks to a story contest via Twitter. There were more than 100 micro-stories submitted in Basque and Catalan, and some seventy people participated in the joint creation of two macro-stories in both languages.

Lima’s Euskal Etxea celebrated Aberri Eguna with mass celebrated by Monsignor Irizar and Basque hymns

Mass officiated by Monsignor Miguel Irizar (photo LimaEE) “Continue and Grow” was the motto and the commitment with which Lima’s Euskal Etxea celebrated Aberri Eguna, or the Day of the Basque Homeland. The event began with mass celebrated by Monsignor Miguel Irizar, recently retired Bishop of Callao after two decades of service and was followed by lunch at the Basque clubhouse. Raul Noblecilla, club president, thanked the younger generation for their presence and participation, who will take the baton and continue the club’s commitment to its Basque roots and the continuity of the center.

Twenty-three year-old, Maite Fraile, gathers video testimonials of Basque youth for “Young Basques in London”

Maite Fraile, London resident and author of the videos "Young Basques in London" Maite Fraile is a Basque girl from Aretxabaleta and she has published a video, on-line, that gathers interviews that she conducted recently with Basque youth in London. The youth talked about how they came to London and include Maite Romero (Eibar), Aida Merino (Aretxabaleta), Naiara Arri (Sopelana, London Basque club member), Imanol Arrutia (Artzentales), Olmar Elejaga (Galdakao) and Mikel Elkoro (Bergara). All the interviews were conducted in Basque and one in Spanish, depending on the preference of the speaker.

War children exiled to the United Kingdom in 1937 were honored in Southampton

Survivors of the group of children of war refugees exiled to the United Kingdom during the tribute in Southampton (photo Irekia) They arrived in England for the first time 75 years ago, alone and afraid, after leaving their parents behind in the middle of the War of 1937. Last weekend, a large number of those still remaining returned to gather in Southampton where the association Basque Children of ’37 and the Basque Government honored them on the anniversary of their exile that changed their lives. The event was attended by Basque Government representatives lead by the Speaker and Minister of Justice Idoia Mendia as well as the Secretary General of Foreign Affairs, Guillermo Echenique.

Euskaldunak of Quebec has expanded its board of directors to include four individuals to drive projects

Quebec's flag with the Ikurrina at Euskaldunak of Quebec's Aberri Eguna festivities (photo QuebecEE) Euskaldunak of Quebec Basque club is changing with the times and in response to the increased number of activities that it has experienced in recent years, has decided to expand its board of directors. The decision was approved on April 22 at the General Assembly which was held taking advantage of the high attendance at the Aberri Eguna festivities in Montreal. Members decided to add four more directors to the board whose goal it will be to help to organize and design new activities.

Euskaltzaleak inaugurates its new headquarters in Buenos Aires, the euskaltegi of the Argentinean capital

Euskaltzaleak's new local was inaugurated on May 5 (photo EuskalKultura.com) “The Basque language is one of the oldest of Europe, identifies the Basques and has been spoken for centuries in Rio de la Plata. Today the Basque language has a hope in Buenos Aires, the Euskaltzaleak clubhouse. Between everyone, students, teachers, sympathizers, friends, the Basque Government, we gathered tiles and all contributed to realize this dream after 68 years of life of the institution.” With these words, in Basque and Spanish, Carlos Bordagaray, club president, was grateful to everyone who collaborated to make the Euskaltzaleak dream of having a clubhouse come true. The ceremony was attended by more than 130 people. Songs, dance, and oak tree and a ribbon cutting preceded the toast that marked the beginning of a new era for Euskaltzaleak, in its headquarters at Bernardo de Irigoyen 826, just a few blocks from the Obelisk.

The Arturo Campion Basque Studies Center of Laprida organizes together with the Basque Summer University of Buenos Aires the Buenos Aires 2012 Basque Studies Conference The Argentinean entities Centro de Estudios Arturo Campion and the Basque Summer University have opened a call to researchers and scholars in Basque studies in its most diverse manifestations to participate in this year’s Basque Studies conference “Buenos Aires 2012,” that will take place at the University of Palermo, in Buenos Aires, on August 24-25, 2012. The goal is to debate the proposed themes as well as disseminate the information to the community in general. Proposals may be submitted until July 6.
