Veronica Domingo is a Basque who learned to speak Basque in Argentina. An active euskaltzale, since living in the Basque Country she has actively collaborated in the Mintzalaguna program volunteering to help students as well as practicing conversational Basque. Her efforts were recognized by being awarded the 2012 Mintzalaguna prize. Looking back, she recalls with amazement the dedication with which she lived the Basque language in Argentina – militancy she says- that is why she can’t understand why people who live in the Basque Country aren’t more excited to learn Basque with it alive in the streets and so close at hand.

Etxepare Basque Institute and the University of Pau are collaborating to offer a position of Basque language and culture lecturer as part of the French Center for the upcoming school year. Because of the administrative rules of the university, the Etxepare Institute has published an urgent call to choose a lecturer that will be in charge of the 2012-13 school year, with an option to extend the contract to the 2013-14 year. The deadline to apply is Monday June 4 at 10:00am.

The Lur Encyclopedic dictionary and the Lur Encyclopedia can already be accessed free of charge on the internet on the Basque Government’s website. The Vice-ministry of Linguistic Policy of the Department of Culture has made these important reference tools available to the general Basque speaking public, as well as to those persons learning the language. These were initially published on paper and were last updated in 2009. It should be noted that the Basque Government adapted 11,000 articles from these resources for publication in Wikipedia this year.

The Different! Festival in Paris will begin this Friday and will run through June 7 with this year’s program including two Basque films, shot in Basque. The first is 80 Egunean by Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga that will be shown this Saturday with Goenaga and the actress Itziar Aizpuru present at the Nouveau Latina. The film is on a roll and has been distributed in France where in can be seen in theaters on June 13. On Sunday it will be the turn of Urte berri on, amona! a black comedy directed by Telmo Esnal. Esnal and actor Joseba Bengoetxea will be present at the screening to visit with the public.

The Euskal etxea Artea has organized several activities lately: dance classes, dinners around Athletic matches, a stand at the fair in Palma… Especially remarkable was the barnetegi that took place at the end of April, both because it was the club’s first and also because of the wonderful response it enjoyed. The intensive Basque course took place over the weekend and gathered students from both Basque classes.. The response was so great that the club is planning to organize another one next year.

After the disappointment of losing the Europe League final in Bucharest the Athletic players have another opportunity for a title tomorrow, if they manage to beat Barcelona in the Spanish Cup Final. The match that is being played tonight in Madrid’s Vicente Calderon field has mobilized Athletic fans from the Diaspora, from the Spanish capital, and elsewhere, who have arrived to Madrid with special pleasure to live the dream of the red and white wave that has already taken over the city to root on the team. Many others will do the same with an ear glued to the radio or in front of a TV screen.

The Eusko Brasildar Etxea inaugurated its new clubhouse on May 5 with a big party attended by both members and friends of the institution like students of it various language and music courses. The event was celebrated with a meal, featuring Paella decorated with Ikurriñas and Lauburus, as well as a performance by a group of Gypsy dancers, whose members study language at the Euskal etxea. The clubhouse is functioning at full capacity with classes in Basque and Mus as well as other cultural and social activities.

The Basque festival that takes place every year in this southern California city, a couple of hours by car from Los Angeles, will celebrate its 40th anniversary. The hosting club, the Kern County Basque Club (Bakersfield is the capital of Kern County) will celebrate it as it should: one of the biggest and best Basque festivals in California. It will include Basque music, traditional dance, public dances, Mus games, barbecues, singing, mass, pilota matches and exceptional Basque-American atmosphere. The historian and philologist Susana Sabin Fernandez will be hosted by London’s Basque Society tomorrow where she will give a talk on the Basque “Children of War” refugees in the United Kingdom during the War of 1936. The researcher has based her doctoral thesis on the study of this history and the very presence of these children in English society. Her thesis was published last year by the Basque Government in English entitled, 'The "Niños Vascos": memory and memorialisation of the Basque refugee children of the Spanish Civil War in the UK'. It was presented at the V World Congress of Basque Collectivities.

For another year friends and members of Rhode Island Basque club gathered to celebrate the annual Festival where they enjoyed roasted pork Txitxiburduntzi style. The event brought together more than 100 Basques from the states of Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York that in addition to food provided an opportunity to enjoy an exhibition of Basque rural sports, herri kirolak. Among the activities were competitions between aizkolaris, harrijasotzailes, and txingas. The Basque club has published a photo essay of the day from which we have included some images.
