In the middle of pre-Olympic London with new facilities and infrastructure everywhere, a new offering brings a bit of Euskal Herria to the English capital. The Donostia restaurant is managed by a pair of wine importers who went to the Basque Country to visit wineries in Alava and who fell in love with Basque gastronomy. Since that love at first sight, they have returned to the Basque Country several times and have now decided to bring the tastes of Basque cooking to London. Its chef has trained in restaurants in Donostia such as the Fuego Negro and the Urepel and among its specialties is Bacalao al Pil-pil (cod pil-pil style).

ETB is looking for a young man from the Diaspora between 18 and 35 years of age, preferably from the US but could be from elsewhere that is ready to go to the Basque Country immediately to appear and participate on one of ETB’s summer TV programs. All that is required is an acceptable knowledge of Basque, and availability during the months of July and August, certain self-confidence and the possibility of starting this week. The person will join a group of collaborators that includes Rocio Basterra, from Argentina, and Sonia Kolazcek, from Poland, both of them Basque speakers.

Lehendakari Juan Jose Ibarretxe visited San Francisco’s Basque Cultural Center last Tuesday to present the Lehendakari Agirre Center in person. This center is supported by various universities and political research centers, such as Columbia and George Mason Universities. Its goal is to present the experiences and achievements of Basque people in areas like economics, business, sustainable development and self-government, internationally, sharing these experiences with others. This Sunday, Ibarretxe will present the project at New York’s Eusko Etxea Basque Center.

A delegation from the Basque Government lead by the Minister of Housing, Iñaki Arriola and the Secretary General of Foreign Action, Guillermo Echenique, will be in New York this Monday to receive the United Nations’ Public Service Award for 2012. The United Nations is recognizing the participatory project "In housing, all opinions count,” promoted during this legislative term by the Housing Department of the Basque Government. This award is the most prestigious international recognition worldwide for excellence in public service. The ceremony will take place at the United Nations headquarters.

The writer Bernardo Atxaga opened the XV Forum for Iberian Studies last Wednesday at Oxford University with a talk where he introduced general reflections on the Basque Country, its language, and its literature. Atxaga was presented by Professor Edmund Williamson, who praised the writer’s international career as well as the contribution of the Etxepare Basque Institute – represented on this occasion by the director of the Promotion and Diffusion of the Basque Language, Mari Jose Olaziregi – to achieve that Euskera be present for the first time at this event.

In this issue, number 15, whose readers are increasing every month in Venezuela, and whose agenda only covered activities in Caracas until now, has expanded to include those in Carabobo (Valencia) and Puerto La Cruz (Barcelona).

Students from the Kukulcan School in Cancun, Mexico joined in the commemorative acts taking place in cities and countries around the world marking the 75 anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika. The initiative was carried out through an explanation of what happened in the Basque town bombed by Nazi and Italian Fascist aviators allied with General Franco. It also included a reproduction of Picasso’s “Guernica” on one of the walls of the center which opened last Friday.

As part of Basque language and culture lecturer program, the Etxepare Basque Institute published the call for four lecturers that will teach in European universities. Two will be in Germany at the Leipzig and Freie (Berlin) university and another in Italy, at the University of Ca' Foscari, in Venice, and the Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna. Finally the fourth will work in Birmingham University, in the UK. The deadline to apply is July 14.

The film 80 egunean (In 80 Days) continues to surprise and this week reached a historic milestone for Basque Cinematography debuting in France in its original version in 25 theaters. The French distributor Epicentre is counting on this film by Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga that can be seen in major French cities, showing in Paris, for example, in six different theaters. In iparralde it will be shown in Biarritz, Donibane Lohizune and Baiona. This presents a unique opportunity to see a film in Basque in France and above all to discover this jewel of Basque cinema that continues to conquer more and more spectators little by little.
