The Secretary General of Foreign Action and the Director for Basque Citizens and Collectivities Abroad have published the list of entities and people who have been awarded grants provided to those in situations of extreme need in the Diaspora. Sixty two people and families are the beneficiaries of this program this year in Basque clubs in Argentina (18 euskal etxeas), Colombia (2), Chile (2), Uruguay (2) and Venezuela (2).

The town of Arrokiaga in Zuberoa hopes to welcome 3,500 spectators on July 29 for a presentation of a pastoral about Diaspora bertsolari and poet Jose Mendiague. Born in Aldude in 1845, Mendiague came to be a beloved personality in the South American Diaspora: he lived in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay and did remarkable work to disseminate the culture and to revive the Basque language and feeling in the Basque community of these countries. He worked with other bertsolaris in the Diaspora and Euskal Herria and is considered one of the great bertsolaris in the Diaspora. On August 15 a second performance will take place in Arrokiaga.

The Etxepare Basque Institute has opened the second application period for 2012 grants for the diffusion of Basque culture abroad that will support cultural activities outside of the geographic scope of the Basque language. The deadline for this second round of grants is September 14 and pending activities that will take place before year’s end, as well as completed activities are eligible. Grants are aimed at activities such as the dissemination of the visual and plastic arts, music, performing arts, and literary works. The budget for this program is 370,000 Euros.

A large number of festivities have been taking place throughout the Diaspora, and the Basque and Navarrese clubs in Argentina are no exception. As the information was gathered by EuskalKultura.com most of the activities took place on July 6, the eve of San Fermin, and have extended through last Sunday, the day that festival lovers say farewell to the festival by singing “Pobre de mi” (Poor me). Meals, mus tournaments, dances, txupinazos, and music follow in the second photographic report on San Fermin celebrations that have taken place in the euskal etxeas in Rauch, Bahia Blanca, Tandil, La Plata and Ayacucho as well as in Navarrese clubs in Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata.

EuskalKultura.com published yesterday in its editions in Basque and Spanish the instructions on how to participate in a book give-away of five copies of the book 'Euskera para Dummies' on July 31 or September 5. As expected many people have already responded but not everyone has provided the required information or did it in the correct manner. Please find detailed instructions on how to participate below. Remember that Euskera para Dummies is an easy introductory book to the Basque language for Spanish speakers, and the translation of an original one written for French speakers.

Berriketari magazine, the digital newsletter that provides the current news from the Eusko Etxea in Santiago Chile provides developments and club activities over the last few months which include a visit to Santiago by the Basque Government’s Director of Foreign Relations Ainhoa Alday, and by the Human Rights Commissioner, Jesus Loza. The historian Jose Mari Garate, also came by, who is researching the life of a sailor from Getaria from the XVIII century, Domingo Bonetxea, along with Francisco Mellen and Jose Manuel Alonso, and the legend of the hidden treasure on the island of Tahiti. Additionally, Berriketari provides the dates of the month that includes the traditional feast of San Ignacio that will be celebrated in Santiago on July 29.

In adherence with the Feast of its Patron Saint, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the Corpus Christi Basque club, in the Northern Mesopotamia region of Argentina has organized a cultural festival that will take place on July 27-29. The goal of the festival is to gather Basques and Basque descendants to participate in activities such as hikes, rural sports, kids’ games, talks, theater productions, music, and dance among others. The big Basque-Argentinean festival will start on Friday the 27 with a reception at the Tourism Office in San Ignacio, and will end on the 19 with lunch. It should be noted that the event was declared of provincial interest.

“Udako Unibertsitate Bolibartarra”, the Summer Studies Session of Bolivar will begin next Monday in the Basque town of Ziortza-Bolibar, Bizkaia with an inauguration that local mayor, Joxe S. Azpiazu, along with a representative of the Provincial Government of Bizkaia, and Jose Maria Unzueta Unsain, president of the Bolivarian Studies Association will also attend. The course will take place between July 16 and 20 in sessions in Euskera or Spanish. Topics of interest will include ALBA, CELAC, teaching today, the former Aquitaine, free software, Nabarra and other topics concerning the economy, even math. The sessions will be moderated by the journalist Itxaso Paia and the Organization announced the intervention on Friday of University of the Basque Country Professor, Esteban Antxustegi, and historian Tomas Urzainqui at the closing session, as well as a ceremonial closure carried out by Patxuko Abrisketa, President of the Bogota Basque Center and provincial government representatives, as well as the mayor of Bolibar.

San Fermin is over already and with the last echoes of “pobre de mi” in our ears, we now provide a photographic journey of events that have taken place in various euskal etxeak in the Diaspora who celebrated again with much enthusiasm. From London, where they named a street Estafeta like the mythical street in Iruña, to Mexico, via Sydney, Australia, and Carabobo, Venezuela where more than 100 people participated in the “encierro” with calves, organized by the Basque club.

When Aitor Inarra decided to move to the US seven years ago from his home town of Donostia, in the Basque Country, he couldn’t have imagined where he might end up, teaching Basque as well as an actor doing films with movie stars such as Nicole Kidman. He came hoping to “take a break” from the Basque Country but after a few years he became homesick and nostalgic and so began to give Basque classes at the SFBCC. Through the SFBCC he got his first opportunity in film and was a part in the HBO film Hemingway and Gelhorn starring Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen.
