The celebration of the local Zazpirak Bat Basque Club’s Centennial in Rosario Argentina has begun. The options are many and varied but all have the same goal: to tell the story of the prestigious position that this Rosarian institution has carved for itself over 100 years. The activities will go 'in crescendo' until reaching the climax on October 26-28 with the celebration of the ASrgentinean Basque National Week (semana Vasca) in Rosario. We want to remind you that the centennial dinner will take place at Zazpirak Bat this Saturday in honor of the euskal etxea’s founding as well as its first San Ignacio celebration.

An Oral History workshop, focusing on Basque immigration to the US, will be offered at the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno on August 10. The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Pedro J. Oiarzabal historian and expert researcher on the Basque Diaspora who is currently in the US conducting extensive research on the subject in many Basque communities of the American West. The workshop was organized with the collaboration of NABO (North American Basque Organizations), the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of Deusto.

Even though Saint Ignatius day is on Tuesday July 31, several Basque clubs have pushed up their celebrations to this weekend. Foremost among these is the Euzkaldunak Inc. Basque club and the entire community of Boise as this is one of their most important dates of the year. The program of activities will begin today with Friends and Family night with concerts, dances, and pilota matches on the weekend. In Miami, Mexico City, Sydney, Caracas, Madrid, Buenos Aires and Asuncion (Paraguay) among others, meals and other festivals will take place.

The ninth edition of the Hator Hona program brought six young Basques from the Basque Country to Necochea. Lierni Zangitu Arroyo, Irati Urkiola Irigoyen, Maitane Andueza Mujika, Junkal Lekuona Alberro, Nagore Lekuona Lopez de Robles and Gaizka Garde Izquierdo put in place a complete program of activities directed at the local Basque community as well as neighboring ones. Classes and workshops began on last Monday the 16 and other events like “Txiki Eguna” (Children’s day) were also celebrated with them. The group will stay in Necochea until August 3, the same day that the Festival of the Aitonas (grandfathers) will be held.

EuskalKultura.com had access to the provisional list of participants in this year Gaztemundu Program. Gaztemundu 2012 will take place in September with a focus on the presence and teaching of the Basque language at the Basque club level. Participants chosen represent Basque centers of the following countries: Argentina (10), Colombia (1), Uruguay (2) and the US (2). Check the list.

For another year, following the tradition, members and friends of the Zazpiak Bat Basque club in Vancouver, spent the weekend in the country in the town of Merritt. The outing took place on the weekend of June 22-24, coinciding with Saint John's night, and of course the Basques of Vancouver lit a bonfire, “a small one,” according to them, in accordance with local laws, and they asked for good luck for the new cycle. The association Ibaialde of Anglet (Angelu, Lapurdi) and the Euskaldunak of Quebec Basque club are working together to organize the expedition Indianoak 2013. In a year, in June of 2013, a trainera with a crew from the Basque Country and Quebec will travel 500 kilometers up the St. Lawrence River from Trois Pistoles to Montreal, in honor of the Basque whalers who traveled these waters in the XIV century. The trip will include 12 stops, where cultural, musical and gastronomical exchanges will take place. The president of Euskaldunak of Quebec, Adelaide Daraspe tells us about the project.

Various initiatives have been taking place throughout the year to mark the 500 years since the invasion and the conquest of Navarre by Castilian troops, both in Navarre as well as in the Diaspora. These activities have been different in character with some being official recognizing the historical process of the formation of the Spanish State that are tinged by the loss of independence of Navarre. In Argentina, Pedro Mauregui Larranda, president of the Zingirako Euskaldunak in Chascomus informed of the commemoration this afternoon at the clubhouse with a screening of “Navarre the Conquest,” followed by historical context provided by Cesar Arrondo.

The construction of a small boat like those used by Basque whalers off the coast of Newfoundland is the excuse and the starting point for the exhibition “Gu Itsasoa” (We are the sea), that reflects the influence that the sea and fishing has had on the Basque Country. The exhibit will be at the Ethnographic Museum of Zerain until September 30, but also provides a complete website where visitors from all over the world can learn more on the subject, in Basque and in Spanish. Ports, Naval construction, logging and forestry, the influence of Basques on other cultures, maritime routes, famous navigators… all this plus videos and interactive panels are available on the website.

The London Basque Society needs to recruit a Basque teacher for the upcoming school year and has invited interested persons to send their CVs. The offer may provide an interesting opportunity for Basques who want to live and work in London. The schedule would require four hours a week, split between two days, with classes beginning in September. Anyone interested in applying should send his/her resume to the London Basque club before August 15.
