The 2012 edition of Gaztemundu began yesterday in Lazkao, Gipuzkoa, which, according to recommendations from last year’s World Congress of Basque Collectivities held last year in Donostia, is dedicated to Basque language teachers who teach in their clubs. As was already published in EuskalKultura.com, the program includes fifteen participants from Argentina, the US, Colombia and Uruguay, as well as one extra attendee from Argentina.

Anyone anywhere in the world who would like to see the “Jose Mendiague” pastoral, dedicated to this illustrious Basque from the Diaspora, can do so via the internet. The organization invites anyone interested, Basque students, Basque culture enthusiasts, and the Diaspora in general to watch the show. It includes Spanish subtitles, expressly for those abroad. They also propose, around that, collective discussions on Mendiague, his contributions, life in the Diaspora that time, or the role of Diaspora Basques in relation to the general Basque culture.

The 16 youth selected to participate in the training program Gaztemundu are already in Euskal Herria, and starting tomorrow will begin the two-week course on teaching Basque at the Maizpide Barnetegi (boarding school) in Lazkao. Participants are Basque teachers from Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay and the US. This year’s program is a little bit special as participants have also intensive Basque courses in order to improve their Basque from September 17-27 at Maizpide.

In hopes of bringing the capital of Buenos Aires closer to the culture and festive spirit of the Basque Country, “Buenos Aires Celebrates” took place on Sunday August 26. The Basque community in Argentina more than met this goal by offering their neighbors, throughout the day , the possibility of getting better acquainted with Euskal Herria through its language, history, music, its dances, and the taste of some typical dishes. The event was sponsored by the municipality of the city, counted on the organization by the Laurak Bat Basque club with the cooperation of numerous Basque institutions that helped transform the Avenida de Mayo into a true passage to the country of the Pyrenees.

The Itxaropen Basque Club in Salladillo, in the Buenos Aires province of Argentina, elected its directors on August 25 and will begin this year, after the election process, with Hector Eduardo Altamira at the head as its president along with Alfredo Elizagaray, vice-president; Maria Silvina Bordenave, Secretary; Sara Silvina Rondeau, pro-secretary; Paulina Ignacia Lord, Treasurer; and Barbara Ugartemendia, pro-treasurer, among other positions.

For the third year in a row, NABO (North American Basque Organizations) and the Basque Government have organized a series of Basque cultural workshops throughout the month of August in US Basque clubs. The workshops will be given by Mayte Galardi and Iñaki Goikoetxea, Fellows of the Directorate of Relations with Basque Citizens and Collectivities Abroad. They will be in the US from August 9-28, 2012 and they will visit the Colorado Basque Club (Denver, CO), Chino Basque Club (Chino, CA) and Rhode Island Basque Club (Portsmouth, Rhode Island).

Nine Basque youth from Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Idaho are participating in an exchange from July 19 through August 11, driven by the Olabide Ikastola in Gasteiz. They are accompanied by cathy Clarkson, teacher and a very active member of the Basque community in Boise. During their stay, the youth are housed with local Basque families and are integrated into local life. On San Ignacio, for example, they dressed in blouses as thousands of residents of Gasteiz. In July, another five boys and girls from Olabide were in Boise, as part of the first part of the exchange.

If you like good atmosphere, have a passion for cuisine, love and have an attachment to the Basque culture and its traditions you have room in Euskal Etxea of Miami. They need more people willing to comit and do whatever necessary to keep the activities alive and the headquarters open. Last week they celebrated San Ignacio, even singing the traditional hymn “Inazio gure patroi handia” (Ignacio our Patron Saint), with lyrics provided by the club’s tireless cheerleader Boni Guenechea. If you live in the Miami area, come and join Euskal Etxea of Miami. Being a part of this family does not require you to be Basque, just a friend of the Basque and share the wonderful atmosphere they have been able to create. Miamiko Euskal Etxeak behar zaitu! The first drawing for copies of the book Euskera for Dummies organized by EuskalKultura.com among its readers with the support of the Publisher For Dummies, the Planeta Group, are from Tandil, Argentina. Maitena Mugica wrote on July 26 to subscribe her friend Cecilia Lejarreta to EuskalKultura.com, both from Tandil located in the interior of the province of Buenos Aires. Congratulations both of them. They will soon receive a copy at their homes of this practical book for Spanish speakers interested in Basque by Jean-Baptiste Coyos and Jasone Salaberria. Zorionak!

There has been a lot of Basque news from Paraguay lately: the festivities at San Juan Bautista and the Misiones department dedicated to Sebastian Sasiain Zubillaga, a Basque from Leinz-Gatzaga who was honored as part of the local festival as the creator of the “Batiburrillo,” (hodgepodge) a dish that over time has become a genuine representative of the cuisine of the area, the creation of a new euskal etxea in that part of the country, as well as the organization of a second edition of Semana Vasca in Asuncion. The Paraguayan Basque Week will begin on October 22. It will be attended by the Delegate of Euskadi in the region, Elvira Cortajarena, and it will include an exhibit on Gernika and a commemoration for the Day of the Statute.
