Gure Txoko in Sydney was ahead of the Diada in Catalonia with its celebration of Basque-Catalan brotherhood

An image of the meal enjoyed at Gure Txoko during the Diada where Basques, Catalan, and Australians got together (photo SydneyEE) For the third year in a row, the Gure Txoko Basque club in Sydney opened its doors to welcome its Catalan friends – that are many – to celebrate Catalonia’s National Day, the Diada, together. It was last Sunday, September 9, a few days ahead of the celebration in Catalonia that took place yesterday. Just like last year, the ambience at Gure Txoko was unbeatable, and the place was full, with meal tickets being sold out the day before. Catalan media, such as the online information portal VilaWeb published news about the event.

The Chino Basque Club held its annual picnic with music, dance, song… and a marriage proposal

Kantuz, from Donibane Garazi were brought to liven up the festivities during Chino's annual picnic (photo ChinoEE) Chino, California’s Basque club celebrated its 45th anniversary as reflected by the full schedule of events for its annual picnic. The festival lasted during the entire weekend of September 1 and 2 beginning with pala matches and a dance on Saturday night. On Sunday the various club dance groups performed, followed by a BBQ for members, friends and visitors. At night everyone danced to the music of Kantuz from Behe Nafarroa. In addition, there was a big surprise according to John Ysursa from the Chino Basque Club.

Secrets of the Heart will open a Seminar on Basque Cinema at the Argentinean Library of Congress

Poster for Ama Lur (1968), documentary on the Basque Country filmed during the Franco regime will close the Seminar on Basque Film on October 2 The film, Secrets of the Heart (Secretos del Corazón, 1997), made by Navarrese director Montxo Armendariz, and nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, will open a Seminar on Basque Film at the Library of the Congress tomorrow, September 11, in Buenos Aires. Organized by the Summer Basque University (UVV) and presented by Carlos Gabilondo, the cycle will run through October 2. Coinciding with the session, the UVV will present a book that collects the works of its students in the 2012 edition and will present the book to the Library of Congress along with the recompilation of all such titles from 2009 until today.

Members of the Rhode Island Basque Club lifted a stone weighing 328 kilos at its annual picnic

Even though the stone didn't weigh 328 kilos it served to teach club members stone lifting technique at the annual picnic (photo RIEE) Yes... but the stone was really made out of wood, and weighed much less than the 328 kilos that was written on it in red, but it served to show members of the Rhode Island Basque club how to lift like the harrijasotzailes (stone lifters), in one of the most enjoyable moments at this Basque club’s annual picnic. It was held on August 25, in the city of Newport with a large group of members and friends of the euskal etxea in attendance, along with Iñaki Goikoetxea and Mayte Galardi, from the Basque Government who gave workshops on Basque culture as part of the Gurea 2012 program. The club published a complete photo chronicle of the day some of which we share here.

Gurea 2012 offered Basque culture workshops at Colorado, California and Rhode Island Basque clubs this August

Mayte Galardi and Iñaki Goikoetxea with members of Colorado's Basque club As part of the Gurea 2012 program, two graduate assistants of the Department of Basque Collectivities Iñaki Goikoetxea and Mayte Galardi, visited three US Basque clubs during the month of August, where they conducted a series of workshops on Basque culture. Colorado, Chino and Rhode Island were their destinations and after returning home, they had a conversation with EuskalKultura.com about their experiences. From anecdotes about license plates in California that say “Thank God I’m Basque” to the admiration that was aroused in them by the efforts made in the US to maintain the culture of the Basque Country there.

The documentary Bertsolari returns to the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center where a part of it was filmed

During its worldwide festival tour, the documentary Bertsolari will participate on September 15 in the San Francisco Latin Film Festival. The night before the film, with its director Asier Altuna, will be at the Basque Cultural Center, where a part of the film was recorded. It was in 2010 during a visit by bertsolaris Maialen Lujanbio and Andoni Egaña and since then, the board of the directors of the BCC has tried to bring the film to the center. Bertsolari is garnering critical acclaim and awards internationally and has gone to Brazil, France, the US, Austria…and in the next few months will also be made available in Mexico and Montevideo.

The revived Society of the Virgin of Arantzazu presents events surrounding the 400th anniversary of its foundation

The Convent of San Francisco where the Brotherhood of the Virgin of Arantzazu was founded in 1612 with 105 signatures Beginning this Sunday, the Feast of our Lady of Arantzazu, several events will mark the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the foundation of one of the oldest Basque associations in the Diaspora: The Brotherhood of the Virgin of Arantzazu, created in Lima, Peru in 1612. On this occasion a group of Peruvian Basques worked to recuperate the Society, that had been forgotten for the last 150 years. Among the events that will take place is the publication of a book on the association, a conference and the inclusion of more members, among whom there will be descendants of the original founders, historians and Peruvian-Basque intellectuals.

The Kulunka Theater presents “André & Dorine” in Los Angeles tomorrow and will be in New York on the 13th

Two of the actors wearing character masks, during a stop on their way to Los Angeles (photo Kulunka Teatro) The Basque theater company Kulunka Teatro is spending several weeks in the US, where it is successfully presenting the work: “André & Dorine.” The group has been through Baltimore, and Albuquerque and tomorrow faces the final part of the tour with three performances in Los Angeles on the 7th, 8th, and 9th of September as well as four functions in New York from the 13th to the 16th of this month. The play, staged with masks and without dialogue covers the topic of Alzheimer’s with sensitivity and humor that is captivating audiences all over the world, according to the company who has been touring now for two years. EuskalKultura.com spoke to Garbiñe Insausti, member of the group, on her way to Los Angeles.

Basque sheepherders who have worked in America will get together in Pamplona on September 15

Event poster organized by Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan The Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan (Basque Sheepherders in America) Association will celebrate the seventh edition of the American Sheepherder festival, that takes place in Pamplona this year. The event will gather herders from both Hegoalde and Iparralde in hopes of honoring those men and their families who immigrated to the US during the mid-twentieth century and their families. This year the festival will include, for the first time, institutional recognition from the Government of Navarre. A photographic exhibit on the theme is being shown at the Palacio del Condestable in Pamplona as an appetizer to the event.

Three copies of Euskera for Dummies are now headed to Patagonia, Argentina and to the city of Cordoba There are already winners of the second drawing for copies of Euskera for Dummies. The books are headed to Argentina, to subscriber Maria Borras Arenas, who wrote from El Hoyo, in the Province of Chubut in Patagonia. Maria subscribed her friend Gabriela Gaydou who lives in Cordoba City, Argentina, where she will receive her copy of the book; and finally, the library that the third copy is destined for is the Library of the Basque Argentinean Association “Eusko Sustraiak” (Andean Region of the 42 parallel), whose mailing address is El Bolson, in the Province of Rio Negro, Patagonia. Congratulations to the winners. To everyone else, don’t give up hope, since we will hold another drawing in a few days.
