Tomorrow, Wednesday at midnight is the deadline to participate in a drawing for 2013 NABO calendars organized by EuskalKultura.com for its readers and friends with the collaboration of this federation comprised of 43 Basque entities in the US and Canada. All you have to do to participate is send an email with your name and mailing address (including country) where you want the calendar to be sent in case you win. The results of the drawing will be published in the Thursday’s newsletter and on the website.

Activities organized last weekend by Bordeaux’s Euskal Etxea as part of “Heritage Day” were very well received, according to the club. One of the highlights of event was the Basque Market organized in Palace Square, organized by the club with the collaboration of Idoki Basque products. Between Saturday and Sunday nearly 1,000 people visited the booths that included handicrafts as well as food. Among the visitors were the Mayor of Bordeaux, Alain Juppé, and the director of Relations with Basque Citizens and Collectivities Abroad, Julian Celaya.

A talk on the Basque Country will begin the “II Basque-Brazilian Week,” this morning in Tremembe’s cultural center, in greater Sao Paulo, organized by the young Eusko-Brasildar Etxea Basque club in Sao Paulo. The program includes talks, informative visits to schools on cultural topics and presentations of the country, music and choral performances as well as a Mus tournament and high mass in Basque celebrated by the Cardinal of Sao Paulo. The local Basque community has worked hard to organize the event and provide it to the community. The events will conclude on Sunday at noon with a traditional “fejioada” or Brazilian farewell.

A delegation from the Euskal Jatorri Basque club in Posadas, in the Argentinean province of Misiones, attended the celebration of the Festival of Immigrants in Obera on September 4. They went to accompany Maria Isabel Beitia, founding member of the club who received an award for her 50 years in the country and for her cultural and social work. Additionally, as in other years, the delegation from Euskal Jatorri participated in the parade of immigrant communities that ran through the city streets.

Mariana Domine, from Arrecifes known as a singer in the Basque folk group Maral, and her sister Estefania are the promoters of “Euskal Herria 2013,” a two week tour starting in Bilbao in May. The idea came from the members of the Euskaldunak Denak Bat Basque club in Arrecifes, who proposed that the sisters take advantage of their knowledge of the Basque Country to act as guides for others. There are already 20 people signed up for the tour, but there are still five spots available.

The Beti Aurrera Aberri Etxea Basque club in Viedma and Carmen de Patagones, in Patagonia, Argentina held its general assembly where new officers were elected to the board of directors. The new board includes: Isabel del Carmen Labiano, President; Sonia Beatriz Gastaminza, Secretary; Mario Fabian Azcarate, Treasurer; and Mariana Ansola, Delia Beatriz Etchegaray, Susana Salvarredi as directors among other people and positions.

For another year, the Eskualdunen Biltzarra Basque club in Bordeaux will delve into the cultural festival, Heritage Days that is celebrated in all of France. The event offers the people of Bordeaux the possibility to enjoy various activities with a Basque flavor. The program organized by the euskal etxea will take place all weekend long, and includes choir concerts, pilota matches, food tastings and an informal dinner at the club’s headquarters.

EuskalKultura will hold a drawing next week for six copies of NABO’s 2013 wall calendars. As part of the motto “Celebrate + Educate = Perpetuate,” the entity that is made up of Basque clubs in the US publishes an annual calendar with images and dates from the Basque Country as well as the Diaspora. In this year’s edition, the theme is the forty years of this institution that was founded in Reno, NV in 1973, and that today is comprised of 43 entities from all over the country. The deadline to participate in the drawing is Wednesday September 19 at midnight. Winners’ names will be published on Thursday.

The giant online community, Facebook, with 900 million active users a month, has chosen the Basque Diaspora as one of its star themes in its newest initiative “Facebook Stories.” Chosen, yes, because the company contacted historian, Pedro J. Oiarzabal, from the University of Deusto, to see if he could provide them with an article on the influence of social networks on the communication of Basques around the world. Oiarzabal, has been researching the Diaspora’s presence on the web for years, emphasizing Facebook’s interest in the subject. The article was published on Monday in English but “it will be appear in Basque in the next couple of days. Something that came from them,” says Oiarzabal.

The Kotoiaren Lurra Basque club, in Resistencia, capital of the Chaco province in Argentina celebrated the 16 anniversary of its founding on September 7. The event gathered more than 100 people, members and friends of the Basque club, at the Don Bosco School in the capital of Chaco. Many of those gathered are also members of other associations of different communities in the province, and participated in the gathering where they could enjoy the club’s dancers, directed by Andrea Tamer.
