The second Basque Week organized by the Eusko-Brasildar Etxea Basque club in Sao Paulo, was an event that left a real good taste in the mouths of its organizer, guests and, collaborators from Bizkaia and Argentina.
The success of this collaboration has now opened the door for possible future initiatives. An delegation from the Argentinean Villa Mercedes Basque club participated accompanied by their Camerata de la Luna choir. The Bizkaian visit was thanks to the Provincial Government of Bizkaia, that also sponsored the team of Bizkaian chefs that prepared the closing dinner.

Lima’s Basque club is very satisfied with the exhibit on the Bombing of Gernika that had been exhibited in the Peruvian capital. The show was organized by the Lima Basque club, with support from the Basque Government and according to club sources, was “a great success.” The inauguration of the exhibit included the emotional story of Jon Guarrochena, club member who survived the bombing at age three.

Thanks to the federation of US Basque clubs (NABO) and the Basque Government’s Euskara Munduan program a workshop for Basque teachers was held in Boise, Idaho on September 15 and 16. Participating teachers came from Homedale, ID, Boston, MA, San Francisco, CA, Boise, ID and Bakersfield, CA along with NABO’s Euskara coordinator, Izaskun Kortazar. Two other professors, Anita Anacabe (Elko, NV) and Jorge Ochoa Garay (Rhode Island) weren’t able to attend due to their participating in the Gaztemundu program in the Basque Country.

A group of Basques living in Poland have created a Basque-Polish cultural association called GU Elkartea. The group aims to build a closer cultural relationship between the Basque Country and Poland. They say that there is interest in Basque culture in Poland, and that they are eager to do things but that sometimes these projects do not materialize due to the lack of an association that can get them started. This is why they decided to create GU Elkartea and are inviting anyone interested to join them via this article in EuskalKultura.com.

Pamplona became the meeting place, last weekend, for hundreds of “amerikanoak” coming from both sides of the Pyrenees to gather for the annual sheepherder’s get together organized by the Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan Association (Basque Sheepherders in America). The day always serves as an opportunity for those who were formerly in the US working as herders and then returned home, to get together, “Without forgetting our time in the American West, which is part of our lives and has influenced us to a lesser or greater extent, as well as the excuse for us to get together today,” according to an 'amerikano' from Sunbilla.

A group of four dancers from the Kukai Dance Company visited Quebec September 11-14, invited by the Quartiers Danses Festival in Montreal to do a series of performances in the streets of the city. The company is directed by dancer and choreographer, Jon Maia, known for his reinterpretation of Basque dance, adapted to contemporary dances, and his show was very well received. During their stay they were supported by local Basque club members from Euskaldunak, who also attended the performances, and served as interpreters between the dancers and the local audience.

Thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute the “Basque Cultural Exchange,” will take place in New York from October 1-13. The program is a sort a cultural window and will provide an opportunity to get better acquainted with various aspects of contemporary Basque culture through film, roundtables and concerts. Coordinated by Joxean Fernandez, director of the Basque Filmoteca and current visiting professor in the Bernardo Atxaga Chair at the City University of New York, cinema and a large number of Basque titles will be highlighted during the conference that coincide with the 75 anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika. Screenings and discussions will take place on “Gernika and the Spanish Civil War in the Basque Country,” while other sessions will cover “Basque icons in the world.” To conclude there will be an overview of Basque music with a multimedia concert in Basque, English and Spanish.

It is called the Basque Culture Collection and yesterday the Etxepare Basque Institute presented the first ten works in Donostia. Each volume of the collection explores in depth an aspect of Basque culture and the themes selected are: Euskara, Basque literature, Basque classical music, Basque songwriting, visual arts, Basque film, architecture and design, euskal dantza, bertsolaritza, traditions, cuisine and theater. The objective is to publicize these themes internationally, and because of this, the collection is trilingual: in Basque, Spanish and English. And, most interestingly for our readers, you can download the PDFs for free on the website of the Etxepare Institute!

Members of Vancouver’s Zazpirak Bat Basque club are anxiously waiting for the XXXV International Mus Tournament to begin. No wonder, since the Basque club has been working on preparations for the event for a year. This year’s event will be like no other as games will be played on board a cruise ship that will leave port on Saturday from Canada on its way to Alaska. The 37 muslaris and delegates of the eleven participating countries will be accompanied by unique and breathtaking scenery during the tournament.
