Mar del Plata Argentina will host more than 120 people this Sunday that all have something in common: they are all members of the same family, the Arrechea-Arrachea family. They are descendants of the Navarrese Juan Mateo and Juan Cruz Arreche Amorena, from Baztan Valley, who immigrated to Argentina and began an extensive family with members in Gral. Madariaga, Balcarce, Maipú, Adolfo González Chavez, Labardén, Pergamino, La Plata, Buenos Aires, Tandil, Guaminí among others. They met for the first time in 2010 and the experience was so interesting that this is already their third reunion.

The Center for Basque Studies of the University of Nevada, Reno is now accepting applications for the William A. Douglass Distinguished Scholar Award for the academic year 2013–2014. The Douglass Scholar must be a specialist in some aspect of Basque Studies and will be chosen on the basis of his/her contribution to Basque Studies and consistent record of research, achievement and scholarly innovation. For 2013-2014, the Center is seeking a specialist in taxation and fiscal autonomy as they relate to issues of self-government and national sovereignty in the current European situation. Deadline to apply is December 14, 2012.

Oier Araolaza, one of the main promoters of Dantzan.com, is very satisfied with their return to the web, especially with the campaign of support that made it all possible. This campaign was supported by dancers and dance groups in the Basque Country as well as in the Diaspora and Araolaza took advantage of questions from EuskalKultura.com to thank everyone in the so-called eighth province for their contribution to the world of Basque dance. “Some things that we are losing here are being maintained in the Diaspora and there, there are groups that work with as much interest and as much rigor as here. The “Basque Cultural Exchange” began last Monday in New York, a window intended to show different aspects of the reality and the contemporary world of Basque culture. Thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Bernardo Atxaga chair, opened last year at the City University of New York which currently occupied by Joxean Fernandez, director of the Basque Filmoteca – the Bombing of Gernika and the Spanish Civil War were the leitmotif of much of the conference that included films, panels, round tables, and an exhibit that will open today and will remain open until December 17. The various program events took place at CUNY, New York University and the Anthology Film Archives as well as at New York’s Cervantes Institute.

Dantzan.com, a website that in recent years has become the reference and meeting place for dance groups in the Basque Country as well as in the Diaspora, returned to the web on October 1. The site had to close at the beginning of the year because of cuts in its institutional aid. At that time, the world of dance started a campaign of support that was successful and now Dantzan.com is back, thanks to the support by some institutions. The help, however, will only last for a short time, and so the campaign to help the site continues.

The movie Gartxot, which is based on the tragic legend of the bard of Itzaltzu, has been very well received since its release nearly a year ago. It just won the public prize at the Film Festival in Auburn Australia and next month it will be shown at the Basque Film Festival organized by Berlin’s Euskal Etxea. In addition, the film is now online and can be seen from anywhere in the world at www.filmotch.com. It costs 2.95 Euros to see and is available in Basque with subtitles in English, Spanish, French, Catalan and Galician. The Gaztelupe Chamber Choir from Donostia will begin its visit today of the West Coast of the US where, as usual, it will combine tourism with performances ,thanks to Basque clubs and communities. The musical group, will travel accompanied by another sixty Basques who will perform recitals in Reno, NV, thanks to Carmelo Urza, USAC and the Center for Basque Studies as part of Donostia’s Sister City, and the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center

Astero, the online news bulletin of NABO (North American Basque Organizations) has announced the upcoming tour of the group Noka in Basque Clubs. The singing group consists of three women of Basque descent from Chino, CA: Catherine Petrissans, Andrea Bidart Oteiza & Begoña Echeverria. The tour will kick-off on October 5th, at the Ontario Basque Club, in Oregon. Other performances will take place at Mountain Home (Idaho), at Stanford University and at the Kantari Eguna organized by the Iparreko Ibarra Basque Club in Lincoln, California.

A team of Basque experts have created the HitzApp application with the collaboration of a Swiss technology company. The application has been designed for iPhone and iPad devices, and currently only one version exists in Spanish. According to its creators, with HitzApp users will learn a larger Basque vocabulary through games and exercises. It costs 6.95 Euros and the company provides similar applications to learn other languages. They have assured EuskalKultura.com that they will present the Basque, English, French and German versions soon.

A delegation comprised of representatives of seven Basque companies from the Tolosa area started a business trip yesterday to Mexico in order to find potential clients, to forge strategic alliances in order to establish oneself in the country, and to get to know potential distributors of their product. The group will conduct most meetings in Mexico City and Monterrey although some businesses will also travel to Guanajuato and Hidalgo, with the agenda of the Office of Representation of the Basque Government in Mexico. The businessmen will also meet with the Association of Basque Entrepreneurs in Mexico (Emprebask) and with the Office of Economics and Commerce of the Spanish Embassy. The trip was organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Tolosa, Tolosaldea Garatzen.
