Anyone interested in taking a course on Basque culture, with mastery in English and access to the internet, can do so this fall at the University of California in Santa Barbara. The university has included two new offerings in its list of courses: Basque Language and Culture and Basque Studies. Both classes are taught by Diana Palenzuela and the cost of enrollment (without earning college credit) is $210. The price for taking them for credit is $1,200. The XXXV World Mus Championships of Basque Collectivities were just hosted by the Zazpiak Bat Basque club of Vancouver, Canada, and already the international mus machine has announced the sites for tournaments for the next five years. Next year’s the tournament will take place in Chile, in 2014 in Mexico, in 2015 in Uruguay, in 2016 in Donostia coinciding with the celebration of the city being named the European Capital of Culture, and in 2017 in Las Vegas, NV.

The Basque Studies Program at Boise State University became a member of the federation of North American Basque clubs, NABO, this weekend. BSU’s Basque Studies Program is a multidisciplinary department that includes various aspects of the language, culture and history of the Basque people. The Program provides the possibility completing a minor in Basque, taking Basque as an elective, or to take part in the various workshops offered throughout the year.

For the first time students in American Basque clubs can take HABE’s accreditation exam in Buenos Aires. Every year HABE makes a special call aimed at Basque clubs, which until now had been organized primarily for students in Madrid and Barcelona. Two years ago a session was held in Paris and this weekend it will take place for the first time in the Americas. The exams will take place at Laurak Bat in Buenos Aires with 32 candidates having enrolled to test in levels 1, 2 and 3.

EIZIE (Association of Basque Language Translators, Editors and Interpreters), the Etxepare Basque Institute and the University of Pau have organized a translating workshop that will take place at the university on Tuesday October 16 and Thursday October 18. The workshop will translate Katu jendea (Cats), by writer Eider Rodriguez and on the translations will be presented to the public on the last day during a musical recital at Pau’s Castle. The recital is open to the public and will also be attended by Mari Jose Olaziregi, director of Euskara at the Etxepare Institute along with authorities from the University of Pau.

The California Basque group Noka, comprised of the singers Catherine Petrissans, Andrea Bidart Oteiza and Begoña Echeverria, began on October 5th a tour of Basque Centers in the US. The tour kicked off at the headquarters of the Ontario Basque Club, and met with a number of people who enjoyed singing with the group a repertoire of traditional Basque songs. The following day, Noka arrived in Mountain Home, Idaho, and played at the Autumn Meeting of NABO. The group will resume the tour tomorrow, with a concert at Stanford University, and the next stop will be on Saturday at Kantari Eguna 2012 in Lincoln, California.

The team representing France, Regis Lavie and Rodolphe Bidart, were the winners of the XXXV World Mus Championships of Basque Collectivities. This year’s tournament, organized by the Zazpiak Bat Basque Club of Vancouver, took place from September 21-29. The games were all played on board a cruise ship which toured incredible landscapes along the west coast of Canada and Alaska. We have included the results of the 12 participating teams.

Kinku Zinkunegi, technician from HABE and coordinator of the Euskara Munduan program is in South America these days where he is touring various countries. The main reason for his trip is to supervise the Basque accreditation exams for HABE that will take place for the first time in Buenos Aires. Prior to that however, Zinkunegi will visit various Basque clubs in Brazil, Chile and Uruguay with whom HABE has agreements to support Basque classes through Euskara Munduan. On October 6 he was at the Eusko Brasildar Etxea in Sao Paulo and yesterday in the Euzko Etxea of Santiago Chile. Today he will visit two more Chilean clubs: the Colectividad Vasca of Chile and the Euzko Etxea in Valparaiso; while tomorrow and the day after he will be in Uruguay. The tour will end in Argentina where the accreditation exams will take place this weekend.

The film, culture and the history of the Basque Country are being featured these days in New York thanks to the Basque Cultural Exchange – Fall 2012, sponsored by the Etxepare Basque Institute. The cultural event began with the Bernardo Atxaga Chair at CUNY which is occupied this year by Joxean Fernandez, director of the Basque Filmoteca from October 1-5. So far all are very pleased with the success of the event with the biggest student complaint being that “it was very short.” In addition, film director Imanol Uribe presented his latest work and a documentary on singer Mikel Laboa, and yesterday a film cycle began on the “Civil War and Euskadi.” Activities will continue this week with more film sessions, debates and concerts.

New York’s Euzko Etxea is preparing the Centennial of its creation next year. The New York center was the first Basque club founded in the US, and during the years has played a key role welcoming and helping Basque emigrants who came to the US through this city. Club members are already working on a full program of commemorative activities which will take place throughout the year. On September 22 they held a Gala to raise funds for the Centennial organization that was a taste of the twelve-month program to come.
