Eusko Indarra in Montevideo celebrates 30 years of sharing Basque dance in Uruguay

The Ikurriña and Uruguayan flag were both on stage.  In the photo dancing "Zapatain," a dance based on the work of shoemakers The Eusko Indarra dance troupe gathered more than 400 friends and guests on October 17 at a theater in Montevideo, to celebrate its 30 years of dedication to the diffusion of Basque dance in Uruguay. The group provided its audience with an exciting show with dances performed by 56 dancers of all ages, “from five years to sixty years of age,” said Eusko Indarra. The show also included the participation o the Basque-Uruguayan folk group Txindurri.

Basque sparked the curiosity of visitors to The Language Show in London

Talk by writer Ivan Igartua entitled, "The Sociolinguistic Situation in the Basque Country" at the fair Last weekend, the Etxepare Basque Institute participated in The Language Show in London with a stand and various special activities featuring the Basque language. The talks on bertsolaritza by Xabi Paya, a bertsolari and lecturer at the Institute, sparked great interest, in which he not only talked about the art of improvisation in Basque, but he also demonstrated it, singing verses in Basque, Spanish and English.

Hegoalde Argentinarra awarded the prizes from its drawing as part of the Festival of Communities

Liliana Victoria, Alba Esperon Oyarzun, Marta Goyheneix and Cecilia Martinez with club president, Cesar Arizmendi at the club's booth (photoEE) Basque club members had many good reasons to make several toast during the first edition of the Festival of Communities in Rio Gallegos. The first reason was their participating in the event that was a great success including choosing the treats in the Basque stand above others. Another reason to raise a glass, according to those in the club, was the successful end to the third season of the “Sala Euskaldun” program. Finally, and as part of the Festival and in order to encourage the public to participate in the Basque club activities prizes from its 2012 drawing were awarded that is two tickets to the Basque Country.

The Basque-Béarnaise group Xarnege will go on tour in Mexico from October 30-November 3

The Basque-Béarnaise group Xarnege performing The group Xarnege has a special relationship with Mexico and the Mexican people, and at the end of this month will return to North America for its third tour of that country. Xarnege’s music is a fusion of traditional music from both sides of the Pyrenees: Basque music and Béarnaise, and according to its members, it resonates well with audiences on the other side of the Atlantic. They will be in Taxco-Guerrero, Mexico City, Morelos and will attend the Festival Calaveras 2012 in Aguascalientes.

The short film “Carmen” by Olatz Gonzalez Abrisketa, wins an award from the American Anthropological Association

Carmen, the star of the film, heals sprains and strains Carmen is a short anthropological film that talks about the “Santiritu” ritual, an ancient popular medicinal technique that is still alive in some parts of Bizkaia. The protagonist of the film is Carmen, a woman from Gamiz that still uses this magic ritual to cure sprains and strains. The short was directed by Olatz Gonzalez Abrisketa, Anthropology Professor at the University of the Basque Country. On November 16, she will receive an award for Visual Anthropology from the American Anthropology Association (AAA). Currently, Gonzalez is working on a documentary on Basque pilota, based on her book on the topic published in 2006.

Santiago Basque club’s magazine Berriketari reports on the meeting of Basque-Chileans in Donostia

Participants in the meeting of Basque-Chileans in Donostia along with Claudio Bravo, goalie for Real Sociedad and the Chilean Consul in Bilbao, Iratxe de Madariaga (photo Berriketari/MAyçcaguer) The last issue of Berriketari, Santiago’s Basque club online magazine, includes news about September and October activities in the Basque-Chilean community on both sides of the Atlantic. Besides reporting Basque club news, this time the newsletter also included information on the meeting in Donostia of Chileans living in Euskal Herria. The meeting took place on September 18 and was attended by the Chilean Consul in Bilbao, Iratxe de Madariaga, and the goalie from Real Sociedad, Claudio Bravo, among others.

A conference at the University of Deusto will discuss Basque emigration and the phenomenon of return

Historian and Diaspora Expert Dr. Pedro J. Oiarzabal one of the conference organizers The University of Deusto will give the floor to members of the Basque Diaspora who have lived the phenomenon of returning to Euskal Herria, as part of a conference on emigration and return. The participants, Veronica Domingo (Argentina), Laura Igantzi (The US), Izar Errandonea (Uruguay) and Irantzu Leunda (Venezuela) will talk about their experiences in a debate moderated by Joseba Etxarri, director of EuskalKultura.com. Prior to the debate, researcher and Diaspora expert Dr. Pedro J. Oiarzabal will give a talk on emigration and return to Bizkaia.

Bertsolaritza is the Basque calling card at The Language Show in London

The Etxepare Basque Institute just got back from the Frankfurt Book Fair.  Shown here, Mari Jose Olaziregi (Etxepare) with editor Laura Ferrero (photo Etxepare) This Friday and Saturday the Basque language will be featured at The Language Show 2012 in London, thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute. As in previous edition, the Institute will have a Basque stand and has also organized a series of events like talks, get-togethers and two presentations on Bertsolaritza. Xabi Paya, Basque lecturer at the University of Birmingham and bertsolari himself will be in charge of talking about the Basque tradition of oral improvisation, as well as sing a few verses. The special events will conclude with a talk on the Basque language by Ivan Igartua and a class offered by Juan Arana lecturer at the University of Liverpool.

A few days before the festivities begin; Zazpirak Bat publicizes the program for Semana Vasca Argentina

Dancing in the plaza during the 2007 National Basque Week in Rosario (photo EuskalKultura.com) Film, music, dance, lectures, gastronomy, mus, sports, walks, lunches, dinners…complete program presented by the Zazpirak Bat Basque club in Rosario for Semana Nacional Vasco Argentina 2012 (Basque Argentinean National Week 2012). The list of invitees is complete as well. Renowned figures from various places will cross the pond to attend the huge week in the Diaspora. Among others, it should be noted, that former president Juan Jose Ibarretxe, who will give a talk on identity and economy will also be present. Among the Basque artists to attend we should mention Urko, Naia Robles, and Natxo Knörr and the dancers from itxartu Dantza Taldea.
