"Seven Houses in France" by Atxaga, chosen among the top 20 fiction books of the year in the U.S.

The cover of "Seven Houses in France" The prestigious U.S. magazine Publishers Weekly has selected Bernardo Atxaga’s novel, Seven Houses in France as one of the best 20 fiction books of 2012. Publishers Weekly is one of the most important literary magazines in the U.S. and its lists of best books are very influential. Atxaga’s novel was published in September by Graywolf Press and is being very well received.

Korrika 18 is coming and will honor Basque students with its motto “Give Basque to Each Other”

New York Basque club participating in Korrika 17 (Photo NYEE) Today Korrika 18 --a fundraising cross for the Basque language-- was presented in Bilbao. According to the coordinator of the AEK Euskaltegi, organizer of this popular event in support of Euskera, the route will begin in Andoain (Gipuzkoa) on March 14, 2013 and will end in Baiona (Lapurdi) on March 24. During this edition several Basque students will be honored and as in previous editions, AEK would like to invite Basques in the Diaspora join Korrika. If you would like to organize a race in your Basque club or community, contact AEK.

The group Itxartu returns very satisfied from its trip to Argentina’s Basque Week

Members of Itxartu with their friends from Rosario's Zazpirak Bat Basque club (photo Itxartu) The dancers of Itxartu are back already from their trip to Rosario Argentina, at the end of last month for Semana Vasca (Basque Week). It wasn’t the first time that the group has had contact with the Diaspora as two of their dancers had given workshops on Basque dance in Rosario, and dancers from Rosario visited Getxo last year. Even so, group members told EuskalKultura.com that this was a very positive experience and that they were surprised by the intensity of the Basque presence and dance in Argentina.

The department of Basque philology at the Complutense University organizes a conference on multilingualism in Madrid

Conference poster At the end of the month, the Complutense University in Madrid will be the site for a conference on multilingualism on the Iberian Peninsula. The event has been organized by the department of Basque Philology at the university and among the presentations there will be two talks on Basque entitled, “What does a Girl Like me do with a Language like Basque? The Standardization of Basque as a Social Movement,” and “The Languages Spoken in the Iberian Vasconia: Spasque and Euskerish.”

Etxepare is organizing a photo contest on Basque designated for students learning Basque in its various programs

Etxepare lecturers along with their bosses on the Institute's steps in Donostia (Photo Etxepare) As part of the celebration of the International Day of Euskera, December 3, the Etxepare Basque Institute has organized a photo contest on social media. The participants will be students and teachers of the 38 Basque language and culture lectureships supported by Etxepare around the world. The top five photos, as designated by popular vote on the Institute’s Facebook page, will then be judged by a jury at Etxepare who will choose the winner.

"On Basque Cuisine" is one of the books of the Basque Culture Collection The raffle for five sets of The Basque Culture Collection, published by the Basque Institute Etxepare, gathered a lot of interest amongst our readers and many of them entered. We were sent entries from many different countries and the five prizes will go all over the world. The winners are Lidia Martha Etchart and Marcial Agostini Zubillaga (Argentina), María Angélica Irazábal Arrospide (Uruguay), Miren Edurne Rementeria Artiach (USA) and Bernadett Hajdu (Hungary). A conference in Gasteiz will analyze the role of guilds and brotherhoods in America from the 16th to the 19th centuries

Oscar Alvarez Gila (on the screen) and Jon Ander Ramos (seated) are two historians who are organizing the conference (photo EuskalKultura.com) The College of Liberal Arts at the University of the Basque Country in Vitoria-Gasteiz will be the site on November 20 and 21 of an international conference entitled, “Devotion and Peasantry: The Brotherhoods, Congregations, and Hospitals for those originally from Spain in America, in the 16-19th centuries.” The event will be attended by experts from the University of the Basque Country as well as universities in Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Colombia among others. The organizing committee includes Alberto Angulo Morales, Oscar Alvarez Gila and Jon Ander Ramos Martinez.

Anthropologist Olatz Gonzalez Abrisketa is doing a documentary on Basque pelota

Anthropologist Olatz Gonzalez Abrisekta Olatz Gonzalez Abrisktea, professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of the Basque country will be recognized on November 16 by the American Anthropological Association in San Francisco when she will receive the award for the best short film. Her film, Carmen, talks about the ancient Basque ritual used to cure sprains. Meanwhile, the expert in visual anthropology is already working on her next project, a film documentary on Basque pelota, and how pelotaris live. Filming will begin in January, and may include stars such as Aimar Olaizola and Juan Martinez de Irujo.

The Berlin Basque Film Festival concluded successfully and the Basque club is already planning next year’s edition

Cartoonist Asisko Urmeneta presented Gartxot, his animated film Members of Berlin’s Euskal Etxea are very satisfied with how well received the recently completed Baskisches Kino Fest was. Despite it being its first year, the festival attracted a good number of spectators and the closing concert by Zuloak and Fermin Muguruza also gathered a large crowd. During five days four Basque movies and various shorts were available for viewing in the German capital, and the city of Leipzig, along with several talks and colloquiums on Basque film. The festival was organized with the support of the Etxepare Basque Institute and collaboration of the Basque Filmoteca and due to the success of the event, the Basque club is already planning another.

A free Smartphone app provides touristic information about the Basque Country

The free app, Euskadiessencial, can be downloaded from this website The Bizkaian company, De Paso Publicaciones, based in Getxo-Algorta, has presented a new app for Smartphones: a touristic guide of the Basque Country that can be downloaded for free, in Spanish, English and French. The company has been developing the Euskadiessencial Guide for several years that is distributed in Basque hotels and now has decided to update it and adapt it to new technologies.
